VHS : Stephen King's The Stand (Boxed Set)
The Stand is impressive in many ways possible! I know the movie is 6 hours in length put it pulled me in after the first episode. It had a great apocalyptic opening where it can possibly happen in real life with the virus and all. The second half jumps into this supernatural realm where people dare not go and I find that fascinating. I got this movie from a 5 movie collection by Artisan (also had Cujo, Golden Years, The Langoliers, and Thinner) and I received the 2-disc version which is good but its probably better than the flipper disc. I despise flipper discs because they get scratched and broken so easily that its not funny. Lucky me I guess. This would be a great DVD title to come out on Blu-Ray. Imagine the entire 6-hour film on one disc with no flipping or changing. The Golden Years was ... Read More

THIS IS A GREAT ADAPTATION OF THE MICHAEL CRIGHTON CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL...THE MOVIE IS CERTAINLY DATED BECAUSE OF THE OLD TIMEY SPECIAL EFFECTS, BUT IT FAITHFULLY FOLLOWS THE BOOK...I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I BOUGHT THE MINI-SERIES AND WANTED TO VIEW BOTH TO COMPARE HOW THEY HAVE HELD UP TO CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY...SO...IF YOU'RE A FAN OF SCIENCE-FICTION GET BOTH AND COMPARE/CONTRAST THE OLD WITH THE NEW...I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE WHO BUYS THIS MOVIE READ THE BOOK AND SEE FOR YOURSELF

VHS : Postman
This is one of the most underrated movies of all time. The Postman is not just your average post-apocalyptic scenario. It is a deeply emotional and philosophical film about the power of hope. What I love about this movie is that it shows how something very simple-- mail-- can become a symbol for everything that makes us human and for everything that makes us American. Yes, its a little long, and yes, the ending requires a slight suspension of disbelief. But the movie is good enough that you wont notice the length, and moving enough that disbelief hardly even enters the mind. I love this film, and recommend it highly.

VHS : On the Beach
I saw On the Beach, as a young boy in 1959, and have never forgotten it, nor it's impacting, hard hitting, unforgettable images! Nobody really knew what to expect from the movie. The movie didn't upset me, but rather, caused me to better understand all that was going on in the world and with the Cold War. (It was a time where "air raid drills" were commonplace in my elementary school . . . all students, single file into the hallways, kneeling down against the wall, hands over head, elbows on the floor . . . and one of us assigned to open the classroom's windows . . . less resistance for the bomb's draft!!!)

I believe this movie was the first nationally seen "visual statement" about nuclear war. The movie is produced beautifully, with outstanding character portrayals by incredible ... Read More

This film opens with a submarine beneath the sea. It detects an unknown object speeding towards them. What could it be? The submarine strikes some rocks and sinks rapidly. Only a buoy marks the spot. There will be an investigation, and a civilian oil rig crew will try to rescue the USS Montana before the hurricane arrives in a few hours. The conversation introduces the people and shows their interactions. The deep diving ships locate the submarine and inspect it. Some enter the submarine to explore it. There are no survivors. One diver has a problem. A strange event occurs. The storm arrives, and mechanical troubles occur to create perils.

There is one disaster after another, and narrow escapes from floods. Will they survive in the cold when the oxygen runs low? Will a strange creature show ... Read More

As always, The Pilot VTTBOTS is in some ways superior to the series. A pretty suspensful film, well written, good color special FX...the 'Global Warming' Addition to the DVD is great, and *also* includes some excellent history of Science Fiction. Get this edition if you buy the film.

Those looking for some sort of deep meaning underlying the film will likely be disappointed but if you are looking for a great evening of 1950's popcorn fare this is it. In fact despite some of its drawbacks it still has something that leaves one with the feeling that the whole film is a whole lot better than the sum of the parts - one of those that you can't quite place your finger on why you like it so much. Unfortunately, people tend to keep reviewing these films through the lens of today's high budgets and often over the top special effects.

Folks when this flick was made computers were the size of large offices, gasoline was around 30 cents a gallon and jet airline service had been around for only four years - get some perspective. This movie gets points just for nostalgia value alone.

If you're into realistic post-nuc war movies then check this out. This is one of the few movies in the genre that I really like. I first saw this when I was like 12 on VHS and had have waited ever since for a DVD version to be released. All of the other reviewers are total haters comparing this to cheesey sci-fi not even close to being realistic movies. The plot is totally plausable and isn't too dated for a movie from the 80's. anyways watch this movie if you're into the genre thats it. The amount of mullets is at a minimum too considering this is a canadian production thats pretty crazy. And iswear one of the guys is the fat guy from cheers in a kilt and shotgun. whats not to like?
