VHS : Hercules (A Walt Disney Masterpiece)
Disney released its 35th full-length film in early 1997 and much like all Disney films be prepared for musical numbers to tell the story.....but they are done by Alan Menken....so it isn't all that bad. The plot is set early in the film: Hades wishes to over-throw Mt. Olympus and imprison the legendary gods that live atop the mystical mountain. So Hades summons the sisters of fate to predict the outcome - their forecast is anything but reassuring. A child will be born on Olympus that will defeat Hades' plot - if Hercules fights Hades will lose. So Hades sends his to loyal henchmen, Pain and Panic, to steal the baby from Zeus and feed him an elixir that will remove the young Hercules' godhood and allow Hades to kill the newborn. Well, in typical style, Pain and Panic, botch the assignment and ... Read More

VHS : Merlin
Originally made as a TV miniseries, Merlin retells the famous legend of King Arthur from the perspective of the wizard Merlin. Sam Neill stars in title role with co-stars Martin Short, Miranda Richardson, Helena Bonham Carter, Isabella Rossellini, Rutger Hauer, John Gielgud, and Lena Headey. It was directed by Steve Barron and produced by Dyson Lovell. In my opinion, it has to be the best movie I've ever seen telling the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, even though it deviates from the more traditional approach to the myth. Judging from the movie, it is plain to see that the costumes and whatnot are more historically accurate than other versions. The things I loved most about the film was it's more fantastical take with the story, including a Dragon, Sprites and a talking horse ... Read More

This movie is by far the best and most well thought about the subject of King Arthur. Though the acting may not be of Oscar-status, it is still the best in its class. Movies today can only hope to achieve the type of status that "Excalibur" has.

VHS : Jason and the Argonauts
Special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen is perhaps the only technical person in the history of the film business to be treated as the primum mobile behind the films he worked on. In effect, to use the European cinema parlance- he was the auteur of his films; the directors were utterly interchangeable. In fact, the only constant through many of his classics was producer Charles Schneer. This is most evidenced in the 1963 action and fantasy classic Jason And The Argonauts, part of the five film DVD collection The Fantastic Films Of Ray Harryhausen, Legendary Monster Series put out by Columbia Pictures.
Technically, the film was directed by the notable non-notable director, Don Chaffey (most famed for his later One Million Years B.C.- with Raquel Welch, and directing a few episodes of the classic tv show ... Read More

This is a wounderful movie and still holds up after all these years. Why one star? Well it isnt the movie, its fantastic!....Alot of people complain about the Special Effects. ....It dosent need any. The origional movie was filmed in "Super Panivision" 1:35:1 aspect ratio, and has been reduced to 1:33 VHS. watching this version, will at best give you a headace. Can you imagine driving thru the Red Woods wearing horse blinders, your view would be drastically altered. The special effects are the Splendor, Grandios, and giant set pieces. When I saw this on VHS I got dizzy from all the Pan and scan needed to reduce it to VHS size. Most of the best set pieces are seriouslly cropped, and the destruction seen, is reduced to a mild storm. You are only seeing about 1/4 of the action, and magnificent sets that cover ... Read More

I first saw this movie on TV and was so taken by it that neither my daughter or myself could leave the room to go to the bathroom while it was on, thinking we would miss something. It is a movie that the intellectually challenged would not appreciate, but it absolutely captures the intellect of anyone who thinks on a higher level than bingo. I immediately ordered it and found that the Spanish teacher was interested in showing it to her class. P Jensen
