Given that I already own The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) (busts and all), I hemmed, hawed, and read other reviews prior to purchasing the 75th Anniversary Edition. However, an Amazon seller listed an offer I couldn't refuse, so I bit and, all things considered, have no cause for regrets.
The Good: First, the print looks and sounds better than the previous releases. Nice and clean with deep blacks, good contrast, and very little damage, the video is solid and a pleasure to watch. However, I'm especially appreciative of the audio remastering--it sounds terrific for the first time (at least in my opinion).
A treasure trove of juicy extras are included, the jewel in the crown being Kevin Brownlow's Universal Horror, which I've caught on TCM. Also ... Read More

Films buffs will want to know that the Spanish R2 'Mundo Futuro' DVD is missing footage. There are four cuts totaling 2.5 minutes of missing footage:

1. The pre-credit sequence is missing.
2. Some dialoge during the press invite, round table scene.
3. When Peter Fonda explores the remains of Westworld.
4. Dialogue at the very end.

Until a better version is released, your best bet is to pick up the R2 UK full frame edition which includes all of the above cuts.

This is a GREAT film, borrowing from BLADE RUNNER, THE TERMINATOR, MAD MAX, and slasher films -- but with its own unique story and style. Beautiful cinematography, wonderful soundtrack (with both classical opera and industrial/punk rock scores).

I won't relate the story, as other reviewers have done so. BUT if you're buying the "Uncut Red Edition," there are some issues you should be aware of.

* This "Eurocult" DVD claims it's uncut, "unlike American DVD and VHS editions." Not true. Yes, this Uncut Red Edition may be uncut, but it contained no scenes that I hadn't seen in my American tape edition. Maybe some tapes were cut, but not all.

* More importantly, this DVD is FULL SCREEN. I'd hoped to see HARDWARE's beautiful cinematography in its wide screen glory, ... Read More

VHS : Terminal Man
Of all the popular authors of recent years, Michael Crichton has to be the one with the most uneven track record of film adaptation. Success with material like "The Andromeda Strain" and "Jurassic Park," and even TV's "ER," is tempered by sludge like "Congo" and this near disaster. Should only be viewed by film students who want to learn how NOT to make a film.

The premise is that a man named Harry Benson (George Segal) has suffered a brain injury that causes seizures resulting in uncontrollable violent behavior. He volunteers to undergo implantation of a "limbic pacer," which is kind of like a pacemaker but it's in the brain, controlling the seizures. Naturally the procedure (first ever in a human) doesn't work, and we see the disastrous results of said failure.

Yes, the entire plot is really as ... Read More

VHS : Have Rocket, Will Travel (The Three Stooges)
With newcomer Curly look-a-like Joe DeRita joining the team, the Three Stooges finally (after 24 years of shorts!) made the jump to feature films with "Have Rocket, Will Travel".
An often bizarre adventure (The Stooges encounter such things as a friendly alien unicorn, an unfriendly giant fire-breathing tarantula, and a trio of robots resembling you-know-who), their feature debut confirmed that the Stooges were back, and bigger & more popular than ever.
Lightweight in plot--and budget--the Stooges succeed on clever scripts such as this one, which places most of the more violent slapstick moments on others, yet gives them plenty of room to clown. Besides this is the fact that, after years of hard labor & exposure, the Stooges were immediately identifiable personalities, and could carry a picture on this strength ... Read More

VHS : Westworld
Filmed by the late Michael Critchton and a stone-faced performance by Yul Brynner as the unstoppable gunslinger, WESTWORLD is, though somewhat dated, a real wild ride. James Brolin and Richard Benjamin go to an ultra-high tech amusement park for a vacation -- it consists of Roman World, Medeviel World and West World. Each is inhabited by robots who are dead ringers for human and to provide thrilling entertainment with no harm to the guests. Brolin and Benjamin go to Westworld to live out their fantasy in the old west and that's when things go nuts. No extras and not the best transfer but still a must for any scifi dvd collection.

VHS : Lawnmower Man (Unrated)
If no one has heard of The Lawnmower Man series, this movie was a considered a breakthrough in movie magic in its time during the early 90's. Many people say this was the TRON movie of its era heavy on special effects and blazing visuals never seen in movie theaters. This was true and The Lawnmower Man was astounding when it first came out however it somehow lost its appeal since the special effects actually bring down the movie.

99% of the time when I buy a "Directors Cut", the movie is improved and usually the added footage makes it more enjoyable if you are a big fan of the movie anyway. This is a completely different movie. It's funny; the one thing in the original movie that has been copied in countless movies is the narrative "feel", and this has been removed in the directors cut. I am going to try to sell this because I will never watch it again.

Terry Gilliam's unique satire is as funny as it is absurd and dark. With the character of Sam Lowry he created the perfect anti-hero, not in the least thanks to the brilliant performance by Jonathan Pryce.

Equally well known is the conflict that Gilliam had to enter into to get his movie released as he wanted it, because the studio heads suddenly got not only cold feet but also the crazy notion to have a happy ending and drastically make cuts in the movie to make it shorter. Gilliam took the right approach, organized a film critics screening who raved about it and thus embarrassed the studio execs. The result was two versions of the movie, the studio version without dream sequences but with happy ending to be shown in the US and a European version of the movie Gilliam had actually made.

It's true Gilliam's original ending ... Read More
