VHS : Stephen King's The Stand (Boxed Set)
The Stand is impressive in many ways possible! I know the movie is 6 hours in length put it pulled me in after the first episode. It had a great apocalyptic opening where it can possibly happen in real life with the virus and all. The second half jumps into this supernatural realm where people dare not go and I find that fascinating. I got this movie from a 5 movie collection by Artisan (also had Cujo, Golden Years, The Langoliers, and Thinner) and I received the 2-disc version which is good but its probably better than the flipper disc. I despise flipper discs because they get scratched and broken so easily that its not funny. Lucky me I guess. This would be a great DVD title to come out on Blu-Ray. Imagine the entire 6-hour film on one disc with no flipping or changing. The Golden Years was ... Read More

IN A NUTSHELL: DOES WHAT A TIME TRAVEL MOVIE IS SUPPOSED TO DO!

This sequel of the superb "Back To The Future" is a very earnest attempt to follow a winning formula up with a truly worthwhile effort in this sequel. Complex, yes, but interesting. Unfortunately, at times it gets a bit too mechanically contrived with the time sequence derivations, and I find myself mentally checking the continuity which detracts from the theme. Nevertheless, if you liked the first "Back To The Future" you will probably enjoy this movie. All the characters are present from the original and they are playing multiple generations almost simultaneously. After all, isn't that what a time travel ovie is supposed to do?

VHS : Satan Bug
The Satan Bug is an uncharacteristic Alistair Maclean movie in that ,unlike his biggest box office pictures, it is not a straightforward slice of heroics but a more nuanced espionage slanted movie with some moral ambivalence to it .It seems Maclean reciognised this too for he authored the book pseudonymously -as Ian Stuart.

The Satan Bug is a deadly virus developed by the US government in a secret research facility in the desert.Flasks housing samples of the virus are stolen and threats issued to unleash the plague on the US .Lee Barrett a government investigator (George Maharis)is called in to lead the investigation .He is aided by Ann(Anne Francis)the daughter of the presiding general in the case (Dana Andrews).Among the suspects is Doctor Hoffman (Richard Basehart)the scientist who ... VHS : Earth Vs Flying Saucers
Out of all the flying saucer / aliens from Mars classic movies there are, this is not too bad. (I rate "The Day the Earth Stood Still" as #1) The storyline is pretty decent and believable, and the special effects aren't too bad for the time. Nothing compared to todays standards of course, but overall, not bad. Definitely worth adding to your collection of 50's martian / monster movies. Also the actors really did a decent job. The ending is also pretty good. I give it a B+.

VHS : Invisible Man Returns
I am a big fan of Universal's Invisible Man films and they are too often overlooked. The production values and acting are far superior to the later Frankenstein and Mummy features of the 40's. While those films are a lot of fun the Invisible Man series is pretty smart and the FX were way ahead of their time. This is the first sequel to Invisible Man and I think in many ways on par with the original. At the very least it's very entertaining. This is available on DVD as part of the Invisible Man Legacy Collection along with 4 other films about invisiblity. The transfers are very good and there are some interesting extras included on the set. This is not to be passed up. I rate it 4 3/4 Stars.

As always, The Pilot VTTBOTS is in some ways superior to the series. A pretty suspensful film, well written, good color special FX...the 'Global Warming' Addition to the DVD is great, and *also* includes some excellent history of Science Fiction. Get this edition if you buy the film.
