VHS : Frankenstein
Given that I already own The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) (busts and all), I hemmed, hawed, and read other reviews prior to purchasing the 75th Anniversary Edition. However, an Amazon seller listed an offer I couldn't refuse, so I bit and, all things considered, have no cause for regrets.
The Good: First, the print looks and sounds better than the previous releases. Nice and clean with deep blacks, good contrast, and very little damage, the video is solid and a pleasure to watch. However, I'm especially appreciative of the audio remastering--it sounds terrific for the first time (at least in my opinion).
A treasure trove of juicy extras are included, the jewel in the crown being Kevin Brownlow's Universal Horror, which I've caught on TCM. Also ... Read More

VHS : Satan Bug
The Satan Bug is an uncharacteristic Alistair Maclean movie in that ,unlike his biggest box office pictures, it is not a straightforward slice of heroics but a more nuanced espionage slanted movie with some moral ambivalence to it .It seems Maclean reciognised this too for he authored the book pseudonymously -as Ian Stuart.

The Satan Bug is a deadly virus developed by the US government in a secret research facility in the desert.Flasks housing samples of the virus are stolen and threats issued to unleash the plague on the US .Lee Barrett a government investigator (George Maharis)is called in to lead the investigation .He is aided by Ann(Anne Francis)the daughter of the presiding general in the case (Dana Andrews).Among the suspects is Doctor Hoffman (Richard Basehart)the scientist who ... VHS : The Bride of Frankenstein
I JUST WATCHED "THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN" FOR THE FIRST TIME (73 YEARS AFTER ITS MAKING). WHILE MOVIE MAKING HAS OBVIOUSLY TRAVELED LIGHT YEARS FROM THE TECHNIQUES USED IS THIS FILM, IT IS STILL A TRUE CLASSIC IN HORROR FILMDOM.
ASIDE FROM JUST A FEW OUT OF FOCUS SHOTS LEFT IN THE FILM, SUCH AS THE TOUCHING OF HANDS IN THE "REBUFFED" SCENE, THIS IS STILL A CREEPY AND RATHER SCARY FILM THAT IS TRULY TIMELESS.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO SEE A LITTLE MORE OF THE BRIDE..BUT MAYBE THE BEST WAS TRULY SAVED FOR THE END THIS TIME.
I COULDN'T HELP BUT FEEL SORRY FOR THE BIG FELLA AS HE TRIED AND TRIED TO BEFRIEND MANY HE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH...BUT WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF A 7 FOOT SQUARE HEADED MAN-CREATURE HAPPENED UPON YOU?
THIS IS A GREAT FILM. I WOULD PAY TO SEE THIS MOVIE ON THE ... Read More

VHS : Fly (1950)
The best laid plans of mice and men, not to mention flies.

This is first rate science fiction, but of a heart-wrenching variety.

This story is a bit in the spirit of Jack London tales, where some spirited individual gets crushed (in this case, literally), by going out too far on his own.

In this case the spirited individual is a family man who happens to be a scientific genius, developing in his basement the first matter teleportation device. It works, but he fails to realize that the wilderness he confronts in it is not as user friendly as his wife and kid. It confuses him with a fly (which was in the disintegrator with him but escaping his notice). In other words he escapes nature's notice, which didn't bother to distinguish him from the fly, treating him with even ... Read More

VHS : The Invisible Man
If you are on this page, you probably already know that this movie is based on H.G. Welles's book "The Invisible Man." I did enjoy the book, but I found I actually liked the movie better. (Undoubtedly because of Claude Rains's phenomenal acting. (All the more kudos to him, since he had to perform the part with just his voice at his disposal!) His character Jack Griffin (already invisible, but disguised with a coat, hat, and other clothes that make him appear visible) comes to a small out of way town. He causes some stir in this clannish town, but for the most part, they seem to have the decency to treat him with the same courtesy they might give a local. With tensions released for a moment, we meet the other central characters including his former friend Kemp, his former boss Dr. Cranmy, and his former potential wife ... Read More

VHS : Island of Lost Souls
I can only guess. It's not released due to hints of beastiality in the movie Island of Lost Souls??? IF so that's just rubbish.

Island of Lost Souls is a great, classic Friday night B&W horror flick that no collection should be without. Period. But we are forced to have a VHS or cheap bootleg. Mystery Of the Wax Museum is hardly a point of discussion here, a nice to have, but Island is a MUST HAVE!

Here is exactly what we need in a collection:
Island Of Lost Souls
Murders In The Zoo
House Of Horrors
The Mad Ghoul

Now how cool of a collection would that be???

HELLO Universal!!! Anyone home??

VHS : Invisible Man Returns
I am a big fan of Universal's Invisible Man films and they are too often overlooked. The production values and acting are far superior to the later Frankenstein and Mummy features of the 40's. While those films are a lot of fun the Invisible Man series is pretty smart and the FX were way ahead of their time. This is the first sequel to Invisible Man and I think in many ways on par with the original. At the very least it's very entertaining. This is available on DVD as part of the Invisible Man Legacy Collection along with 4 other films about invisiblity. The transfers are very good and there are some interesting extras included on the set. This is not to be passed up. I rate it 4 3/4 Stars.

VHS : Forbidden Planet
Forbidden Planet was always a science fiction favorite of mine due to it's outlandish setting, great acting, great sets, great characters, excellent science fiction and human element. It's pretty much everything good science fiction should be but too seldom actually achieves: intellectually stimulating, frightening, sexy, bold in story and look, fantastic, etc. This 2006 remastering is stunningly beautiful even on a standard DVD. Someone kept or found an excellent print or negative which is very fortunate.

So in this Forbidden Planet DVD we have arguably the most significant science fiction film of the surrounding decades beautifully restored to probably better than it's ever been seen in a theater. Kudos to the makers and restorers of this classic.

For those who haven't seen Forbidden Planet, it's been likened ... Read More

VHS : Man Made Monster
'Man Made Monster' is one of those little talked about gems from the Universal archives. Lon Chaney Jr. does what he does best and plays another very unfortunate soul who gets the short end of the stick. This is a good solid reworking of the Frankenstein idea with and few changes here and there. Chaney Jr. will never be remembered for being the brilliant actor his father was as in this film, his acting skills are good, but there as subtle as a heart attack as he goes from "happy go lucky all around good guy" to a walking zombie. In his defense, this film is very short(59 minutes)and there isn't much time to get fancy! No matter.....as it's always been a favorite of mine and I'm glad it's available now on DVD on 'Universal Horror' a 5 films set of old Universal classics. Look for it as a Best Buy exclusive for a limited time only.
