VHS : The Invisible Man
If you are on this page, you probably already know that this movie is based on H.G. Welles's book "The Invisible Man." I did enjoy the book, but I found I actually liked the movie better. (Undoubtedly because of Claude Rains's phenomenal acting. (All the more kudos to him, since he had to perform the part with just his voice at his disposal!) His character Jack Griffin (already invisible, but disguised with a coat, hat, and other clothes that make him appear visible) comes to a small out of way town. He causes some stir in this clannish town, but for the most part, they seem to have the decency to treat him with the same courtesy they might give a local. With tensions released for a moment, we meet the other central characters including his former friend Kemp, his former boss Dr. Cranmy, and ... Read More

VHS : Invisible Man Returns
I am a big fan of Universal's Invisible Man films and they are too often overlooked. The production values and acting are far superior to the later Frankenstein and Mummy features of the 40's. While those films are a lot of fun the Invisible Man series is pretty smart and the FX were way ahead of their time. This is the first sequel to Invisible Man and I think in many ways on par with the original. At the very least it's very entertaining. This is available on DVD as part of the Invisible Man Legacy Collection along with 4 other films about invisiblity. The transfers are very good and there are some interesting extras included on the set. This is not to be passed up. I rate it 4 3/4 Stars.

VHS : Forbidden Planet
Forbidden Planet was always a science fiction favorite of mine due to it's outlandish setting, great acting, great sets, great characters, excellent science fiction and human element. It's pretty much everything good science fiction should be but too seldom actually achieves: intellectually stimulating, frightening, sexy, bold in story and look, fantastic, etc. This 2006 remastering is stunningly beautiful even on a standard DVD. Someone kept or found an excellent print or negative which is very fortunate.

So in this Forbidden Planet DVD we have arguably the most significant science fiction film of the surrounding decades beautifully restored to probably better than it's ever been seen in a theater. Kudos to the makers and restorers of this classic.

VHS : The Invisible Maniac
Ok. I can't tell whether the Invisble Maniac is intentionally cheesy or not. It is clear the film makers are poking fun at themselves and other "B" films, namely slasher movies, but this film is funny either way, simply because of the overacting and horrible special effects. But if you are looking into renting or purchasing this movie, overacting and horrible special effects should be exactly what you expect.
If you're a fan of Troma films then you know what to expect. Rent it if you can.
