VHS : Stephen King's The Stand (Boxed Set)
The Stand is impressive in many ways possible! I know the movie is 6 hours in length put it pulled me in after the first episode. It had a great apocalyptic opening where it can possibly happen in real life with the virus and all. The second half jumps into this supernatural realm where people dare not go and I find that fascinating. I got this movie from a 5 movie collection by Artisan (also had Cujo, Golden Years, The Langoliers, and Thinner) and I received the 2-disc version which is good but its probably better than the flipper disc. I despise flipper discs because they get scratched and broken so easily that its not funny. Lucky me I guess. This would be a great DVD title to come out on Blu-Ray. Imagine the entire 6-hour film on one disc with no flipping or changing. The Golden Years was ... Read More

VHS : On the Beach
I saw On the Beach, as a young boy in 1959, and have never forgotten it, nor it's impacting, hard hitting, unforgettable images! Nobody really knew what to expect from the movie. The movie didn't upset me, but rather, caused me to better understand all that was going on in the world and with the Cold War. (It was a time where "air raid drills" were commonplace in my elementary school . . . all students, single file into the hallways, kneeling down against the wall, hands over head, elbows on the floor . . . and one of us assigned to open the classroom's windows . . . less resistance for the bomb's draft!!!)

I believe this movie was the first nationally seen "visual statement" about nuclear war. The movie is produced beautifully, with outstanding character portrayals by incredible actors. ... Read More

VHS : V - The Original TV Miniseries
If you like really bad dialoge, lousy action scenes, and weak casting then anything by Ken Johnson would do. This mini-series is a joke, The Johnson commentery and short featurtte is a joke, and as useual it is packaged with Warner Brothers second rate DVD standards.

If you're into realistic post-nuc war movies then check this out. This is one of the few movies in the genre that I really like. I first saw this when I was like 12 on VHS and had have waited ever since for a DVD version to be released. All of the other reviewers are total haters comparing this to cheesey sci-fi not even close to being realistic movies. The plot is totally plausable and isn't too dated for a movie from the 80's. anyways watch this movie if you're into the genre thats it. The amount of mullets is at a minimum too considering this is a canadian production thats pretty crazy. And iswear one of the guys is the fat guy from cheers in a kilt and shotgun. whats not to like?

I loved the book (and it's sequel, After Worlds Collide) when I was young. The movie is certainly not as good, but still a lot of fun. Its too bad they never made a movie of the sequel.

Darn!!!! The acting by the lead charter was well it stank. But the story line was well written. I must admit that I have seen some of his later work and it was a lot better. I give everyone an fair shake and this movie needs to be remade. Who ever wrote this movie needs to have their hand shaken. A.L. Scott

VHS : Day the Earth Caught Fire
Excellent movie about an end of the world scenario. Multiple nuclear tests make the earth change its orbit and it is inevitably heading towards the sun. The movie concerns people's reaction to the situation. It's a tense, gripping movie that also features a very sexual performance by Janet Munro. Seeing her at her most beautiful and giving such a strong performance makes one sad that she died so young and led such a tragic life.
