Just wow. This is one of the best films ever, better than the first, and that's saying a mouthfull.

VHS : Critters
CRITTERS is my favorite movie of it's type. I like it even more than GREMLINS (which I love), and far more than any of the other "puppet-monster" movies that came out (Ghoulies, Hobgoblins, etc.). CRITTERS takes us to the tiny town of Grovers Mill, Kansas, the site of an alien invasion. It seems that a renegade bunch of crites ( little, furry, carnivorous space monsters) have escaped from intergalactic prison, and headed straight toward earth for a snack (us)! This leads to a night of horror and hilarity, when the rolly creatures arrive and begin eating any / all flesh in sight! Two extraterrestrial bounty hunters are dispatched to hunt down and destroy the crites before they can fully satisfy their insatiable appetites. The bounty hunters are hilarious, as they can make themselves look like anyone they ... Read More

I had forgotten this movie was so funny and good. Well executed. Good SFX. My boys loved it too.
And BD-Live. Yes, admittedly a little slow to load but fun. A lot of potential there. How about downloading official subtitles that are not on the blu-ray? This is the future!

VHS : The Road Warrior - Special Edition
The title says it all here folks. I've been a long time fan of this series (and by series, I mean 'Mad Max' and 'The Road Warrior', not that abortion of a movie 'Max Max beyond Thunderdome'). Anyway, this is the Australian release titled 'Mad Max 2', not 'The Road Warrior', so it has a slightly different intro, and they do refer to Mel's character as Max, not as the 'man with no name' like they did in the U.S. version.

Not a lot in the way of extras here. The picture is very grainy when viewed in hi-def. Not anything you can do about it; it was a limitation of the time since it wasn't filmed in hi-def. Still, the film looks good despite it's age and the sound is good. If you don't have it on DVD, you can certainly pick it up in that format cheaper than this was ($13).

I bought this knowing that the story would be different, and it was! I liked it, but I'll have to try listening to it in Japanese. Alita (Gally, in this OVA), has SUCH an irritating voice in english. She's too girly compared to the manga. There should have been more action, but what was there was pretty good.

Hugo was a jerk, not the out of reach tease he was in the manga.

I have to say there were way too many sex scenes! (Just two, but it was indecent!)

I enjoyed it, especially "Tears Sign" ("Tears of an Angel" in the manga).

If you choose between this and the manga though, get the manga. 5 million times better!

It looks great, it's fast-paced, it has good actors, but it's a turkey.
What went wrong?

Firstly, one of those actors - Rene Russo - doesn't have her heart in it. And since she's the love interest, that kills the love story. There's been plenty of negative comment about Mick Jagger in this, but he's fine. It seems most people just can't get their heads around such a famous rock star being an actor.

The major problem is the script, which probably had merit when written, but ended up after the rewrites making very little sense. You can watch this movie and enjoy the ride, but at the end you just ask yourself, "What the hell was that?".

None of it makes much sense. Every scene has been designed as a photo opportunity to make the film's technicians look good on show reels - and ... Read More
