VHS : Boogiepop Phantom - Evolution 1
Boogiepop Phantom is anime horror the likes of which I have not seen since the OVA of Vampire Princess Miyu. After two episodes of B.P., I am hooked. Thank you RightStuf for bringing this to DVD. I can't believe ADV did not pick this one up.

The city is haunted by a beautiful young woman known as Boogiepop Phantom (the Japanese voice in the mid-episode commercial marker pronounces it "boo-gee (soft g)pop," so you might snicker). Rumors abound of the strange woman at the local high school, but many think she is just an urban legend. No one can deny, however, that several students have disappeared.

The vignettes are told in present time and flashbacks to elementary and junior high. Those high school students who meet Boogiepop are tormented in some way. They do ... Read More

VHS : Boogiepop Phantom - Evolution 2
This is the second DVD in the Boogiepop Phantom series, an essay in creative anime that rivals Serial Experiment Lain in its non-traditional approach and noir-like story. If anything, Boogiepop Phantom is the more disquieting of the two, despite having a cleaner resolution. Part of the reason for this is that in Lain it is the central character who spins down, while in Boogiepop there are multiple story arcs, all of which deal with the progressive destruction of character and relationships. By the end of this DVD you may find yourself wondering if anyone will survive in something resembling a normal life.

Boogiepop (for which you can read phantom) is a feminine character who haunts the night and for reasons that are still not completely clear is selective killing people with odd talents. ... Read More

VHS : Boogiepop Phantom - Boxed Set (Evolutions 1-4)
Boogiepop is great for people who love interesting animation and dense subtext-filled storylines. Part horror, fantasy and film noir, the story is full of surprising twists. The music is very good too. I think Boogiepop is too violent and difficult to grasp for children, but older teens and adults would enjoy it. If you like the anime, you might also want to read the paperback manga books on which it is based.

VHS : Boogiepop Phantom (Vol. 4)
Unlike many an anime series that uses confusion as a plot device, Boogiepop Phantom actually does try to tie up many of its loose ends, in particular those that revolve around Poom Poom and Manaka. These latter are tied into the grand story arc of memory and change that drives so much of the plot.

It takes a bit of thought to see how the pieces fit, but all the clues are there and everything that went into this series was necessary to get to episode "Under the Gravity Rainbow," which it the first of the two endings required by the story. Echo, Boogiepop, and the Manticore, all released in that great explosion of light, all working within the framework of a humanity that is in the throes of its own evolution.

Manaka's ability as Echo to recreate memories makes her the source from ... Read More
