VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both then and now, is largely rhythm section dominated (elecrtic bass, drums, guitar and keys). Therefore, it may have been difficult for a Marsalis, a horn player, to appreciate.

Why refer to Marsalis and not Burns? Because nearly all of Burns' analysis depends upon the ... Read More

My son is now 2 yrs old & only Teletubbies really captures his attention & he finds it hilarious! We enjoy the "Grand ol Duke of York" sung by King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys.
I thought I'd never let him watch this show but, he really likes it & it really isn't that bad at all. It is educational....

My 14 month old daughter LOVES this section of the tape and this has been her favorite thing to watch since she started watching videos. All she has to do is hear "funny lady's" voice and she stops what she is doing to watch. The rest of the video is entertaining as well (although I find the segment on finding rabbits boring).

VHS : Teletubbies - Funny Day
A pink fluffy cloud comes inside and this is thrilling to the Teletubbies, until they have to live with the fluffy cloud for any amount of time. Then they realize what a mess it makes. A big string comes down and as the Teletubbies pull and pull on it, a big mess is made and again, NooNoo has to clean up. Custard is dropped and messes are made and fun is had by everyone.

Although this whole movie is one long movie about making messes and the funny things that can happen, there are short segments in there that make for good breaking points when watching this show. This way children can watch a short 10 min. section and not feel like they were left hanging. I find this important for my little boy who likes closure.

What makes the Teletubbies so fun to children is their predictability. If one Teletubbie ... Read More

VHS : The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns (Boxed Set)
Ken Burns' epic documentary about the Civil War is perhaps the greatest and most all-encompassing history lesson of the North/South conflict that has ever been put on film or page. Not only is every important detail of the war covered (and in such a way that the details are interesting and important, not boring), but two entire episodes are devoted to the build-up and aftermath of the conflict. Essentially, if you were teaching a class on the Civil War, this video is all you would need, as it both conveys the vital information of the war, and does so in a way that doesn't stagnate. In essence, a very tight, well-produced series.

The only reason I give this set four stars out of five, though, is that it lacks (althouht through no fault of its own) the emotional punch of Burns' more recent "The War" (World War II) ... Read More

VHS : Teletubbies - Christmas in the Snow
I absolutely love this DVD because it has so many entertaining clips that differ from the rest of the series because of the unique snowy environment. My daughter loves to watch the Tubbies go sliding down a snowy hill and build a snow Tubby. The clips of real children around the world celebrating Christmas are also a lot of fun, and the music from those clips is carried through the rest of the video.

my 15 month old son is absolutely entranced with the show and with this video. He brings it to me and asks for it without words as often as he can find the case--and I enjoy it too! It's enjoyable, doesn't talk down and is very informative! A family favorite!

If you are interested in learning about orangutans, there are a LOT better choices out there. The film is about Julia Roberts's month-long experience with orangutans, as seen by Julia Roberts, who left the comfortable surroundings normally enjoyed by Julia Roberts. Do we really need the montage of Julia leaving NYC, with multiple art-school close-ups/silhouettes? Or so much focus on her Hepburnesque boat making its way up the river?

Still, orangutans being what they are, there is footage to commend this effort. Seeing the orangutan empty a flooded canoe to make its way across the river and help scrub clothes is genuinely touching. The closing scene is a piece of real life that is understandably upsetting to Ms. Roberts, who manages a short debriefing of the moment, but is clearly, as she puts it, "freaked out". Then the ... VHS : Merry Christmas Teletubbies
This video is cute. It is filled with the typical Teletubbie antics- dancing, tumbling, repitition etc. Two video tapes to sit through is a little bit too much Teletubbies for me. However, there are some natural stopping points built in, similar to other Teletubbie videos. You can easily let your child watch a 20 minute segment and turn it off and you are not turning it off in the middle of something.

Although my three year old has turned onto other things like Sesame Street, Dragon Tales and others, he still enjoys the Teletubbies. My 20 month old really enjoys this video.

I realize there is some controversy with Teletubbies. However, I think they teach sharing, caring, being nice, cleaning up after yourself. I have also read many reviews which say that Teletubbies don't teach anything, but they do- the repetition is ... Read More
