VHS : Fawlty Towers - The Complete Collection
Fawlty Towers is one of those British sitcoms that although they haven't a high number of episodes, the quality alone is something to make it a timeless classic. I think the high number of people who wil gladly vouch for how good this sitcom is only expresses the true quality of the comedy and the cast involved. The characters are well defined and the setting is utilised to its full potential. Only 13 episodes were made but managed to gain such a cult following, those 13 episodes were just enough to keep the likes of Basil Fawlty a household name for over 30 years. Only the likes of Del Boy and Rodney have gained such a heightened level of comedic status.

The story is simple, Fawlty Towers is a hotel owned and managed by Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) and his wife sybil (Prunella Scales). ... Read More

VHS : Cats - The Musical (Commemorative Edition)
I love this musical, I saw it for the first time when I was 8, now I'm 18 and I still love to watch it! It is exactly how I remember, but much clearer, I would recommend it to previous viewers and to families with young children.

VHS : The Devil's Widow (Tam Lin)
I really wish a DVD existed of this movie! In 1972, I was channel-surfing in the middle of the night and came upon an airing of Tam Lin, halfway through the movie. I was 19 then, and the movie seemed mystical and surreal to me; for quite a while I could not figure out what was going on except it involved Janet and Ian and Ava and ominous overtones, and I was blown away. As the movie neared the end I recognized the Tam Lin theme, but the movie was shown under the Devil's Widow title and "modernized", although the music seemed to have appropriate medieval overtones...but I never made a firm link to Tam Lin until years later ...and I never saw the movie again. But I'd like to, because it seemed to me that it suceeded in conveying the atmosphere of Faerie and the glamor (in its old sense) that confuses ... Read More

VHS : The Story of Robin Hood
Honestly, I can never have too much Robin Hood. I love each and every take out there, and that includes "The Story of Robin Hood", a little-known live action Disney version from the 1950's. I love the gorgeous Technicolor, the delicate matte painting backgrounds, the folk ballads, the archery, the Richard Todd. More on him in a minute.

It's hard to imagine a more sedate version of the rollicking legend. Not that the film is boring; it isn't. It's just oddly calm. There's action, but no peril, plot, but no ideas. The film is a straightforward telling of the facts, so to speak, but we are never allowed any thrills or chills and there is never any doubt that it'll all turn out right in the end.

The cast is decent, minus any real standouts. Joan Rice is a pretty, tom-boyish Maid Marion, and ... Read More

VHS : Richard Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier / Karajan, Schwarzkopf, Edelmann, Salzburg Festival Orchestra
It is a real shame to realize that there is no difference in quality between the VHS version and this new one on DVD. This is originally such an unbelievable and charming performance with Karajan at his best years and with the unbeatable Schwarzkopf in her most amazing opera role. After having seen this version in a theater, it is very difficult to watch this poor quality video at the time of high-resolution DVD. In addition, the English subtitles from the VHS version have disappeared - I could not believe it. If you really want to own this version, do not spend this money on the DVD version. If you still have a VHS player, go and get the VHS version at low price.

Belatedly, I planned to write a review of EOD. However, I find that the rest of you got here first, and have written well-deserved high praise!

I first saw EOD here in the US on a syndicated basis. They chopped it up into two parts, and cut a lot of little "unnecessary" bits (like Craven looking out a second storey window and seeing McCroon stepping out of the trees with a shotgun). The sound quality was fair to poor, also.

We eventually got hold of the 2-cassette VHS copy, and caught all the things we had missed.

This is bravura work, all around. It's a superb cast, with great writing, classic direction, a fine score. If you're not familiar, read the reviews below, and see this, in uncut form if you possibly can. And as Darius Jedburgh said, "It was a hell of a mission, though."

VHS : Christmas Carol - The Movie
Being 22, I grew up knowing the story of the Christmas Carol in movies and theatrical shows. I tend to think that the one I saw most - the 1992 release - as being my favorite, but I happened upon this version during a cable TV special. I first thought, Oh geez another animated project...but I was surprised by the sheer depth, character and beautiful animation of this movie. The actors who voice the characters are brilliant (and Kate Winslet gives a stellar performance on the theme song, "What If") and the mice bring much needed fun to a rather serious kind of story; the animation is interesting (especially during the Ghost of Present scenes with the swirling colors and images intermixed with the gorgeous music), although a bit old in comparison to today's standards it is still a nice combination and very decent for the early 2000s. Overall, it's ... Read More
