VHS : A New Leaf
How can it be that Walter Matthau's best performance, especially a comedy performance, is not available on DVD? It's a shame, because this is arguably the most brilliant dark comedy from that wonderful golden age of grown-up films from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. This movie is way too funny and brilliant to be this undercover and cult. Elaine May is to comedy what Coppola and Scorsese were to drama. Her writing is as good as comedy writing gets, and her performance gives a glimpse at how wonderful a comic actress she really is. No B.S. either. This one of the great comedies. Can't believe it's not on dvd. Not to be missed. I remember seeing this on tv when I was a little girl and thinking, that is a wonderful world those two people live in. It played the midnight show in college and the crowd ... Read More

VHS : Stuart Saves His Family
There are about ten laughs in this film by smarmfart Al Franken. Worth seeing once.

But Franken's brilliant creation is Stuart himself.

Full disclosure: I loath Franken's politics and most of his other humour, but this work is a brilliant exception.

Stuart Saves his family is an overlong extension of a SNL skit about "Stuart" the over twelve-stepped psychological casualty of our continuously self-indulgent selves. Rather than overcome his traumas, Stuart nurses them like a bacteriological growth in an inner Petri dish. He stumbles through a series of activities where his therapiezed world view provides conflict with others functioning normally (operating thetans), and abnormally (everyone in his family). I never really got the works of LRH, but his paranoia about ... Read More

3.Beetlejuice (P&S Slip) starring: Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Annie McEnroe, Maurice Page

VHS : Beetlejuice (P&S Slip)
Maybe the definitive Burton film (or maybe more like a tie with `Edward Scissorhands'), `Beetlejuice' is a perfect representation of what Tim Burton is all about. It is loud and boisterous and at the same time dark and edgy. The film very much looks and feels like almost everything that comes out of the Burton factory, yet it is surprisingly fresh in a way. Maybe this has to do with the fact that it is one of his earlier works and so the colors and graphics are not as crisp, which adds an almost gothic layer to the films feel.

Then again, maybe it is the mere fact that Michael Keaton gives the best performance in any Burton film; ever.

The film follows Adam and Barbara as they learn to cope with life after death. Yes, a horrific car accident leaves Adam and Barbara dead yet confined ... Read More

VHS : The End (1978)
I remember my parent's taking my brother, sister, and I as kids to see this movie. (A LONG time ago)
I found it hilarious as a child, and watched it several times as an adolescent on cable. I ordered it because I remember Dom DeLuise being SO GREAT as Sonny's best INSANE friend trying to help him kill himself. Throughout the years my family has kept phrases from this movie alive. Such as "Your right Sonny, it's not high enough!" Or we mimic Burt at the end of the movie bargaining with God. The closer he gets to shore the more he rescinds or minimizes his promises to Him.
Without Dom, this movie would have been mediocre to BAD. But with him in it, I would still give it 5 stars. When he is introducing himself to Sonny (who thinks he's a doctor) and stands up propping his leg in the chair and while flashing Sonny ... Read More

5.Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas starring: Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro, Tobey Maguire, Ellen Barkin, Gary Busey

VHS : Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
The reviewer is right who stated the mainstream doesn't get Gilliam. Bottom line is people will still be talking about this movie 100 years from now when most of the Academy pop favs will be forgotten. I thought I had to clarify what is actually happening and why Depp is in LV to begin with.

"The novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas accounts for two trips to Las Vegas, Nevada, that Hunter S. Thompson and attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta took in March and April of 1971. He was writing an exposé for Rolling Stone magazine about the killing of Ruben Salazar, the Mexican-American television journalist whom officers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shot in the head, at close range, with a tear gas grenade during the National Chicano Moratorium March against the Vietnam War in 1970.

VHS : Buddy Buddy
This is a Lemmon-Matthau classic. This rates equal if not better the the grumpy old men flicks. Jack Lemmon is one of the best actors of all time and Matthau is superb as well. I can't understand how this is not available on DVD.

7.The Wrong Box starring: John Mills, Michael Caine, Ralph Richardson, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore

Just want to say how happy I am to see that finally this most excellent movie will be on DVD. I see it's being offered on ebay by a guy in England, the package says it's a Columbia Classics, so will we get it in the States soon? I sure hope so, our 3rd VHS tape of this movie has had it. A family favorite for years...we love the whole cast, especially the dry Tony Hancock, "I know, I Know"

8.Bedtime Story starring: Marlon Brando, David Niven, Shirley Jones, Dody Goodman, Aram Stephan

VHS : Bedtime Story
Worth buying just to see the "Great" Marlon Brando playing a dim witted but endearing playboy to David Nivens' suave, elegant and debonoir character . The original version of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", Bedtime Story follows the amusing antics of two "gold digging" scoundrels competing for the favors and fortunes of wealthy widows in Europe's playgrounds of the rich.

VHS : Harold & Maude (Aniv)
I first saw this movie when I was about 14 years old (1979), back in the days when movie channels would play the same 2-3 movies over and over. I fell in love with it then and have been in love with it ever since. I even won a free ice cream cone at the Ben an Jerry's in Ithaca, NY when (in 2002) I was able to tell them the significance of Maude's tatoo. I have always told my friends that Harold and Maude is my favorite movie and that I think the best movie ever made was Life is Beautiful, by Roberto Bergnini. If you think about it, there are many parallels

VHS : Gazebo
"The Gazebo" was just as I remembered it from years and
years ago...funny, clever and just the right amount of
suspense. The old black and white movies are hard to
beat and this one certainly proves it. It's a must!!
