VHS : The Alamo
I love this film. It's entertaining as it can be but historically it is way off the mark. The lyrics of one of song goes as follows: "...let the legend grow and grow....'bout those thirteen days of glory at the siege of Alamo..." I think this demonstrates Wayne's philosophy..."let the LEGEND grow and grow..." He had no problem with bending the facts a little to emphasize the glory that was Alamo.

I'm in total disagreement with this philosophy. I think that the actual story of Alamo is so compelling that it shouldn't be fictionalized. So what if a few men, including possibly Davie Crockett, tried to surrender at the end? Outnumbered, out of ammunition and with a bayonet at your throat, ANYONE would have surrendered. It doesn't diminish the heroism by one iota.

VHS : Wyatt Earp (Widescreen Expanded Edition)
Wyatt Earp came out around the same time as Tomb Stone. It seemed that Tomb Stone over shadowed Wyatt Earp for some reason but I much preferred Wyatt Earp. Dennis Quad is a much better Doc Holiday than Val Kilmer. In fact, as much as I like Kilmer him being Doc Holiday was one of the things that kept Tomb Stone from appealing to me. On the other hand, Quad's Doc Holiday is one of Wyatt Earp's strong points. Kostner is excellent in this role. He is able to show Wyatt's personality changes throughout the movie as events effect his life. This is a long movie but it has a good pace that makes the three plus hours go by quickly. Not as well as Pearl Harbor did but not bad. Even though the movie is long, and they cover a lot of territory, I couldn't help feeling that there were some holes left unfilled here and there. Like, ... Read More

I first saw this movie back in the mid '60s when I was about 14 and thought it was a great movie. I recently purchased it on DVD and looked forward to enjoying it again. Unfortunately, like some wine this movie didn't age well. While there were some amusing spots (Donald Pleasance's performance)I found a great deal of the movie to be rather corny and ham handed. It was amusing to view again after forty years or so but for me it's not a keeper.

I put this in my top 25 greatest westerns. Lots of good actors. Lots of shoot em up. Vengeance is the driving force of the story. Good sub plots. Will be or is a western classic. I bought the box set of Sam Peckinpah's western. Was worth the price for 4 movies and free delivery.

VHS : Shalako

This movie was based on one of the stronger Louis L'Amour books, a book to stand beside HONDO for its strength of hero. Unfortunately, the film is only a pale representative of the book. One thing I find strange in some of the listed reviews is the statement of the film being atypical as in "offbeat" or "unique". The plot of the book and movie can be seen as truly western in approach and outlook, nothing strange in either one that would warrant or support an 'offbeat' or 'unique' tag.

The book opens in the year 1882, with Shalako coming down out of the Sierra Madres Mountains of Mexico, out of Sonora desert, through dangerous Apache country. This movie though filmed in Spain has a sweeping scope to it and offers good backdrop to L'Amour's western story, be it book or movie. The film has several notable actors and ... Read More

This is a fantastic film, a brilliant example of a western or a war film, as well as being a very entertaining movie. The action is brutal and the directing makes this an amazing spectacle.

This is one of the best films I've ever seen.
