"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. This film, nominated in 1999 as Best Foreign film, is a very sweet film about three young people coming of age in Lebanon during civil war. It does a great job at picking up some of the idiosyncrasies of the Lebanese people, as well as the French under whom they were once ruled. Its very entertaining, has great music, and does an extraordinary job of conveying the nuances of the society and its societal partitions. It illustrates religious conflicts while remaining a gentle and humane film. Even people who don't normally like foreign films should watch this movie because it shows how much more alike we all are than how we are different.

After having read a few books and scene numerous documentaries on the subject. The World at War series did a great job on this. I had to purchase this movie even knowing the reviews here were mixed. I agree with many reviews on both sides. Overall I would say this to be a good movie though. It was well made and acted. My only complaint is they tend to portray the german soldiers as cry babies, deserters, remorseful, disobedient, and un-tough. I'd say that's very far from the real truth. The german soldier was as good as he was because he wasn't any of those things. Obviously with so many german soldiers in this battle you would find some of these kinds of people but all together in one company? That's hard to believe. While it is a very good film, it is a great movie- in the feel good sense of the term. Filmmaker George Lucas claims this film was the inspiration for his third rate Star Wars films. The reissued DVD version of THE GUNS OF NAVARONE is a great improvement over my tired old VHS copy. Not only is the film in widescreen presentation, the color and sound is superior to the tape version. As with most Alistair MacLean inspired movies we find a story with a handful of commandos, plan gone awry with double agents in their midst, battling a large contingent of the Wehrmacht. One wonders what the Germans were doing with all that substantial air power, armor, and artillery on a small island at a time when the Eastern front was collapsing. This is a 1962 attempt to be an accurate rendition of D day, based on Cornelius Ryan's book, "The Longest Day", when the allied forces of world war two crossed the English Channel and fought their way up the beaches of France. The whole film is of the events of that day. The list of popular actors playing the parts of the various countries and ethnicities of the time is too long to mention in this review. However Eddy Albert (a method actor) was quite believable and contributed much to the energy of this rendition. Be sure to see Eddy Albert again in uniform in "Teahouse of the August Moon" (1956.) In the product description is said it has subtitles in spanish, due to the fact that my dad only speaks spanish I thought it would be a great gift for him and make him remember his days of youth, but its just a BIG LIE!!! the movie only has 2 languages: English and French. Now why didn't we returned it? We are too far away to start a process like that and my dad was too excited to take a look at the description that he just peeled off the wrap.

But, when history meets Hollywood, history will almost always get mugged along the way. The Civil War at Sea, (volume 3) by Virgil Carrington Jones, page 13 tells the truth about the fictional assault OVER the wall and into the fort.
