VHS : Dracula: Prince of Darkness (Ws)
Dracula Prince of Darkness was Hammer's only Scope entry in the Christopher Lee series, but it's frankly a rather dull and dragged out affair - Drac doesn't appear for 49 minutes and the first hour of the film could have been done much better in half the time. Lee is clearly bored and has little to do, but Andrew Keir's gun-totting monk is one of Hammer's most interesting characters and there's no doubting the effectiveness of Barbara Shelley's transformation from uptight sister in law to hottie demon dyke ("You don't need Charles!"). There are good moments, from Dracula's reincarnation to the Dracula-on-Ice finale, and the fact that the hero and heroine are called Charles and Diana is good for a few unintentional laughs, but this is far to sedate and drawn out for its own good.

VHS : Vampyres (Ws Clam)
A very interesting blend of erotic sex, and gothic elements, including extreme violence. Vampyres is a beautiful film about two hungry Bisexual women, lusting for young men's blood. A must see.

Not sure why this took me two times to appreciate. Maybe my mind can only handle so much. But I've now become possessed, subdued, entranced. This is an extraordinary piece of horror cinema.

Dario Argento expertly pulls you into this confrontation of utter evil. He uses highly stylized penetrating violence that will be emblazoned in your memory. There are plenty of other lush, abhorrent visuals that will leave a nasty impression. And the ultra-gory special effects promote a stark fear that will scramble your brain. Overall, it's a story that will leave you bewildered and frightened.

Totally incredible. Step carefully into the madness.

VHS : Don't Torture Duckling
Warning: I'm a spoiler type reviewer from time to time, when my reviews take on specific aspects of the plot, so be forewarned.

Try as I might, I just simply couldn't get into this one. Perhaps it was the washed out tones; perhaps it was the drawn-out approach--I'm not really sure, but though this was by no means a "bad" movie, I didn't really find it to be very much of an "effective" movie (words that I understand are so much more arbitrary than their common uses).

So, basically, the deal here is that a series of adolescent boys' deaths sets off an investigation and anxiety in a small provincial town, triggering a witch hunt. What do the boys' death have to do with the mysterious, sexy woman who has appeared in town? Is the crazy hermit woman involved? Is it voodoo? The story is a mixture ... Read More

VHS : Q the Winged Serpent
"Q" is one of my favorite films. Helmed by one of the great cult writer/directors, Larry Cohen, this movie is an outrageous blast! Michael Moriarty is PERFECT as the much put-upon Jimmy Quinn, a small-time hood/loser who stumbles upon the hidden nest of an ancient creature that's decapitating roof-top sun-bathers and window-washers! Awesome! Of course, being a cynical, world-weary type of fella, Quinn decides to keep the location of the murderous monster a secret until the city coughs up some serious green. Moriarty's voice inflections and mannerisms are absolutely infectious! At one point, at the end of his emotional rope, he lies down on the couch and drones out a line from a scat song he performs on the soundtrack: "Evil dream, go away!" David Carradine provides solid support, also, as the cop on the trail of the flying killer. ... Read More

VHS : I Saw What You Did
The DVD includes the original trailer as well as a brief promo that Vincent Castle did for the movie. "I Saw What You Did" shows what happens when you make too many prank phone calls! I love this movie because it's so funny. These kids in this film are so totally silly. And everyone was so polite. What's up with that? Were people really like this in the 1960's? As usual Joan was perfect. My favorite scene was the one where she went nuts on Libby and chased her all the way back to the car. It was so funny, I thought Joan was going to have a heart attack. Rock on.

VHS : Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
The image is good, but not fantastic, probably taken from a master video tape, but without restoration. The black is sometimes too grey without enought contrast, the colors are granular and twinkles a bite the way video (tapes) images use to.
The movie is absolutly great, probably the second-best "Dracula" ever made after the 1958 Hammer film.

VHS : Horror Hotel
Hadn't seen City of the Dead, aka Horror Hotel, since I was about 10 years old and it scared me then. I wanted to see if it had the same effect now, which it doesn't, but that's not to say it's not a genuinely eerie movie at times with some very effective moments of creepiness.

The real treat of this DVD, though, is a long, 2001 interview with Christopher Lee which is a part of the special features. He is so funny, so charming & has such intelligent things to say about his career; actors today; the state of British film and the British media. I enjoyed the movie, but I think this DVD is worth getting just for this interview alone.
