I was 18 when I saw this movie for the first time, and it gave me quite a shock - for the first time, I realized a movie could be more than just entertainment, then it could inform, infuriate and chill you at the same time.
This movie depicts the events surrounding the death of the charismatic leader of a leftist Greek political faction. As the judge in charge investigates, he realizes that it isn't an accident, but murder, sanctioned by important people. These events are based on the real-life assassination of Gregorios Lambrakis in 1963.
The directing is taut, the actors excellent, and the tension mounts steadily. This is a movie you must see - and ponder seriously. How strong is democracy ? Can a faction in power manipulate events and push aside (or even kill) anyone who opposes ... Read More

fascinating french movie. not overly sentimental and romantic, but at times erotic and lustful. a quiet, slow burning desire. when life was fulfilled and so satisfying, you might just want to end it right there. a movie clicked a core of your soul and would keep vibrating for the rest of your life.
glamorously beautiful hairdresser, a serene, warm, ravishing and passionate woman played so just-right by an excellent actress. the husband role was a bit too old but also a mature, likable and even lovable character played by a fantastic talent actor.
highly recommended.

1939. A communist soldier is sent to a very remote province to collect to collect songs ( A visible homage to Bela Bartok, who gathered more than three hundred songs of the Hungarian Folk) , but additionally he will learn much more about the real life.

The admirable simplicity of this plot should not be an obstacle to appreciate the body and facial languages at a evry superior level.

This was the first Op. of this sensitive director of "fareweel my concubine" , Chen Kaige.

... from the moment you see a character with Down's Syndrome identifying with a tv history of Mongolia, until Spanish crooner Luis Mariano serenades him on a sweet chocolate trip out of time.

I'm glad to see all the good reviews. I thought I was the only American who had ever seen this movie, but apparently it's left its mark on a few others. Auteil is wonderful as always, and Pascal Duquenne is remarkable. I believe the two of them shared that year's best actor prize at Cannes.

Please, please, please put this film out on region 1 DVD!

This film does not have a storyline. It is simply an assembly of dancers, singers and guitarists performing. All very talented and beautifully filmed. It creates a special atmosphere. I felt like watching it over again immediately after the first playing.

VHS : High and Low

While I generally view Kurosawa's original Stray Dog as another in long line of his genre setting triumphs, High And Low is his masterpiece of the crime genre. High and Low was made in the middle of his career before Kurosawa's decline when his failure with Dodeskaden and getting kicked off of Tora, Tora, Tora caused him to go on hiatus for nearly ten years and drove him to attempt suicide. Thankfully Russia came along with a chance to adapt Dersu Uzala a film I wish was given the respectable double dip that Criterion is doing with their earlier releases.

I discovered High and Low early in my exploration of Kurosawa mainly overlooking it because it wasn't a samurai period film something I thought He had excelled in and only that. It happened by chance that I borrowed the orginal Criterion ... Read More

A wonderful journey through two continents, exploring present-day music of the Roma people. Colourful, exciting, moving, you see the most extraordinary performances in the most inhospitable circumstances.....Tony Gatlif, himself part-Roma, was privileged to be able to join these groups of travellers and record their very special, and exclusive to them, culture.

I know it's sacrilege to suggest that a cut-down, dubbed DVD is superior in any way to the original. But in this case it does have its advantages. This film (originally titled Drunken Master 2) is JC's best Kung Fu choreography you'll find. This version is shorter than the Hong Kong version, has only dubbing, and replaces the original score. But being as this is such a fantastic fighting film, the watered-down format makes it more palatable to the casual viewer. You'll have no subtitles to read (and at least Jackie dubs his own voice), all the action is preserved (you only lose some bits of the story), and you get the cleanest picture available. For any die-hard fans I, of course, recommend getting the uncut original. Now, onto the movie itself.

Jackie Chan has a pretty broad spectrum to his work. Some films ... Read More

The time-honored "man and woman stuck on a desert island" scenario is served up with a heaping tablespoon of class struggle and an acidic twist of sexual politics in this controversial 1975 film from Italian director Lena Wertmuller. A shrill and haughty bourgeoisie woman (Mariangela Melato) charters a yacht cruise for herself and her equally obnoxious fascist friends, who all seem to delight in belittling their slovenly deck hand (Giancarlo Giannini), who is a card-carrying communist. Fate and circumstance conspire to strand Melato and Giannini together on a small Mediterranean isle, setting the stage for some interesting role reversal games (with definite S&M overtones, I should warn you). This film has a polarizing effect on viewers, which I think can be attributed to its fascinating feminist dilemma: How does one react to an ... Read More
