VHS : The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns (Boxed Set)
This is another great documentary accredited to Ken Burns. Nicely done and extremely informative. I purchased this for my wife who loves it and has watched it several times over.

Very good serie about a US naval family during the pre war days of 1939-1941. Also very informative about the outbreak of WW2

VHS : Cnn: Cold War (8pc)
This is an excellent series, done in a similar style to the WWII documentary "World at War" (both were produced by Jeremy Isaacs--Ted Turner had seen that earlier program and asked Isaacs to produce a cold war documentary). Unfortunately it's never been put on DVD, and the VHS version has long been out of print, with used copies typically fetching over a hundred dollars. So if you want to see it and don't care too much about video quality, I recommend going to video dot google dot com and doing a search for something like "cnn cold war", or "cold war" plus a specific episode title--most or all can be found online.

Buyer beware! The newer DVD set of this FABULOUS series is not up to the quality of this VHS edition. The DVDs are made by the History channel, and the sound quality is awful. This older VHS version, produced by New Line features (although on tape) has a much finer sound quality and even the video isn't that bad, compared to the lousey transfer of the DVDs.
These are still the finest chronicles of war footage AND narration that have been made of WWll, in my opinion. Try to get thru them without tearing up at the human sacrifice and bravery.

UPDATE: Mill Creek Entertainment now has a 3 disc DVD set for UNDER $10.00 with all the 26 episodes. I have compared them side by side PIP on my TV....Identical prints as the VHS tapes, only slightly sharper on the DVD's. Sound quality same as tapes, ... Read More

I purchased this 'now 4 VHS tape set from Blockbuster Video new.
I returned the re-recorded set now in SLP/EP mode for vrey poor audio, and not a very well done worthless set of 4 vhs tapes.
>The 1987 EMBASSY HOME VIDEO 2 VHS original mono is much better in every way. It's out=of-print, but a professional recording.
The original 2 VHS set leaves the new phony 4-tape set back on Corregidor, no food, no water, no Uncle Sam.
Reproduced-reedited-Re ally a dismal set of what was a 2 volume set. NWB; Not Worth Buying

6.Battlefield Collector Set (4pc) starring: Battlefield

VHS : Battlefield Collector Set (4pc)
In a time in which many documentaries are short on details and long on broad strokes and generalizations, I cannot overstate the quality of this video and the entire series. The detail and research which went into these documentaries is outstanding. As the other reviewers have noted, the series focuses on the battle from a number of different angles and tie the strategic planning, tactics, and results to the broader context of the Second World War.

Although each of the videos stands on its own, together they create a most effective narrative of the ebb and flow of WWII. As a connoisseur on the subject, I cannot think of a higher recommendation or of a documentary which has provided more utility than Battlefield.

VHS : The 50 Years War: Israel and the Arabs
The documentary is a really good introduction through different sources but gets a bit dry towards the end. It actually led me to look for other ways to learn more about the conflict. I stumbled across a video game called Global Conflicts: Palestine that is really worth a try.

9.The Great Battles of World War II starring: Sam J. Jones, Katherine Kelly Lang
June 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The Great Battles of World War II
This is a remarkably bad presentation of the "great battles" of World War II. To begin with, in an alleged introduction to the causes of WW II - probably written at a time in 1946 when the Soviets had to be pleased - the authors do not EVEN MENTION THE SOVIET-GERMAN PACT OF 1939 !!!! The rest is a superficial, long winded, boring collection of news footage and other pictures, with poor sound and rudimentary texts. To be avoided.

10.The World At War - 9 Volume Gift Set starring: Laurence Olivier, Sir Max Aitken, Stephen Ambrose, André Beaufre, David Belchem

Being for warned about the sound was fine and not a problem, I managed it by turning up the volume. A good concise video going over causes and political actions taken before and during the war. It touches the war from all viewpoints. I highly recommend adding this documentary to your video library.
