VHS : Cats - The Musical (Commemorative Edition)
I love this musical, I saw it for the first time when I was 8, now I'm 18 and I still love to watch it! It is exactly how I remember, but much clearer, I would recommend it to previous viewers and to families with young children.

VHS : Grease (20th Anniversary Gift Edition)
C'mon, Paramount. No one loves Grease more than us hopelessly devoted fans. But if you are going to roll out yet another attempt to repackage our beloved classic, make it worth rolling out the bucks. How about this: offer a re-release with the (!!!!!!!) ORIGINAL THEATRICAL AUDIO TRACK as an option. We love the remastered print, etc. But some of us really long for the original track, especially because some of the classic songs were over-remixed in the 1998 re-release. The biggest disappointment is not being able to hear the movie the way many of us first experienced it in 1978. (No disrespect to composer John Farrar, but) I miss watching "Hopelessly Devoted to You" without the unnecessary - and sometimes distractingly over-mixed - backing vocals, for example.

Many classics that ... Read More

When I first saw this program, it was during a late-night fit of insomnia a year ago. I turned on the TV, flipped through a few channels, and stopped dead when I heard a tidbit of gorgeous, heartwrenching music playing to a program on PBS. It seemed to be a biography...on Gustav Mahler! Now, at the time, I was 18 years old and I had been a classical music fan for just a month or so. But I sat glued to this Mahler program. I learned all about the correlation between his sad, troubled life, and his stormy, tempestuous music. I couldn't have changed the channel if I tried. It was mesmerizing. At the end, when they announced that they would explore the life of Tchaikovsky the next week, I was thrilled. I made a mental note to catch the program, but they must have switched timeslots because I ... Read More

VHS : Cyrano De Bergerac (translation by Anthony Burgess)
I saw this RSC version of Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway back in the 1980's with Sir Derek Jacobi and Sinead Cusack in tandem with Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. I was overwhelmed by the performances at the time and was thrilled when the play came out on VHS. I cannot emphasize how incredible Sir Derek Jacobi was in this role (he never gives anything less than a great performance!). I've seen just about everything he's ever done on the stage both in New York and in London. How could this video not be available on DVD? It is one for the ages!

VHS : Astaire & Rogers Collection Volume 2 (Swing Time, Shall We Dance, Carefree, The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle, The Barkleys of Broadway)
It was the touch of finger tips, a hand on the waist, a longing look and a smile, and a graceful spin; it was Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, making love while they danced into our hearts and stayed there. It was elegance and charm, a romantic screen teaming like no other. Fred and Ginger gave the country a boost and a bit of hope in dire times, and made a collection of funny and romantically elegant dance musicals that have never been surpassed as film entertainment. There was magic when they danced, and charm when the talked to each other.

Here, in this wonderful boxed set, are some of their finest films. It is a bit of heaven you can slide into your vcr any time you need a lift, and never be let down. Even the wonderful "Carefree" is included, a film less like the others in that the emphasis was on the screwball ... Read More

VHS : Shakespeare Collection (6pc)
This video trilogy is a set of live theatrical performances taped up in Canada of three of Shakespeare's more familiar works: "The Taming of the Shrew," "As You Like It," and "Romeo & Juliet." Unfortunately, they are not the most LIVELY theatrical performances I have encountered.

The productions are sound, and obviously ably directed. But that doesn't fully counteract the fact that, especially for two of Shakespeare's sillier comedies, they just aren't played very funny. This particular production company obviously went for a deep artistic production rather than audience-friendly entertainment. Which is too bad, for I like all three plays when they are done well and captivating.

These are NOT the videos to buy if you're hoping to foster a love for Shakespeare in new-comer junior high students, which is what ... Read More
