VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 3 Box Set: The Rose Rent, A Morbid Taste for Bones, and The Raven in the Foregate
These three mysteries, based in England during the Middle Ages, are really quite well done. Of the three I think A Morbid Taste For Bones was probably the best.

The Cadfael mysteries are not just good mysteries; they also provide an interesting look at life in the Middle Ages and how things were done, the role of the Church, Royal officers, etc.

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of murder. What is worse is his brother ... Read More

VHS : Brother Cadfael Series 1 Box Set: The Sanctuary Sparrow, One Corpse Too Many, Monk's Hood and The Leper of St. Giles
These are the best of the series. It may be your introduction to the books or a chance to see the stories you've loved come alive.
These are the closest to the books (the characters and stories suffer some distortions) and perfectly cast and acted.

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
I have the entire collection of the Carmichael Wimseys, and although I agree with the reviewer who said the actor doesn't meet my image of the character, I also have to say that he does grow on one with each succeeding play--and, because of it's vintage (970's), the series is in fact more like filmed theater, which makes it all the more enjoyable. By the time I got to Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise I enjoyed the Carmichael take on the character. I'm not sure quite who could play this role true to the author's version. The Edward Petherbridge Wimsey Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries (The Lord Peter Wimsey-Harriet Vane Collection - Strong Poison / Have His Carcass / Gaudy Night)was also difficult to engage with, but his version was also very good. Perhaps the character is so much a creature of mind that ... Read More

A poor production, both sight and sound. Rumpole, and the people who love the series, deserve better.

Like many thousands of Morse's fan,I like the TV serie very much. I bought 2 of the 6 volumes set of VHS .
The video and sound is very good , but there is a big problem
I have , and I do not know if my fault, or problem with the
VHS editions: the problem is that they are without
closed caption!!!!!
I tried before buying to find specs in the Amazon view;
but not finding information about that, I assume they
should have closed caption, like almost any TV program
Thanking in advance to anyone that advices when VHS
..with closed caption.. are available. Thanks
A Morse fan

7.Lord Peter Wimsey - The Nine Tailors starring: Ian Carmichael, Glyn Houston, Keith Drinkel, Elizabeth Proud, Anne Blake
directed by: Raymond Menmuir

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey - The Nine Tailors
The Nine Tailors is generally agreed to be Sayers' finest book. There isn't much romance, but it uses flashbacks to put Lord Peter Wimsey in the frame of the First World War and explain his relationship to Bunter, his faithful man servant. Ian Carmichael delivers one of the outstanding performances of his career. The other characters are real, believable, people who suffered through WWI and the 1930's.

VHS : Inspector Morse (Collection Set 4)
These stories are all so well-crafted and superbly produced. You can watch them over and over again with fresh delight each time. If American television were like this, I would not get any writing done. We have four sets and I am now ordering the last.

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise
I ordered this because I loved the Harriet Walter and Edward Petherbridge versions of the Harriet Vane stories and because this is the best of Dorothy Sayers' Wimsey stories. It lacked the pathos of Edward Petherbridge's version of Wimsey and somehow the wit got lost in the rather plodding re-telling of the plot. Some of this is due to the production values of the period it was made: you realise just how more imaginative and expressive the best direction and scripting has become since the seventies. Ian Carmichael does a good job, all things considered, although he is too old for the role, especially when he refers to his older sister who looks young enough to be his daughter. It fails to engage your imagination and the Pierrot identity that Wimsey assumes does require that the story have an ironic tone if it is to be carried ... Read More

VHS : Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd/Lord Edgware Dies
This set contains two later adaptations of Agatha Christie novels. The second, Lord Edgware Dies, is an adequate, though not great, telling of the story. As always, Suchet is superb as Poirot.

Unfortunately, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd misses the mark. The producers evidently did not understand the original novel either in its style of presentation, nor in its historical significance. While not well known today, this novel when first published aroused a storm of protest from within the mystery writing community. The only mystery writer who came to Christie's defense was Dorothy Sayers. The others did not understand the novel, which changed everything about the way mysteries are presented.

Sadly, the producers of this edition did not understand the novel, either. We still await an adequate adaption of this wonderful work ... Read More
