VHS : The Boy Friend (1971)
One must never compare the Stage to the Film when it comes to musicals. Sometimes they are better than the original. Sometimes worse. ALWAYS different! That's just the nature of the transition. This is one of the great film musicals of all time. It's just not Sandy Wilson's "The Boy Friend". I love the stage play as well. This is a musical film about a production of the stage musical with all kinds of backstage intrigue as well as the terrific device of seeing a number "as is", as the director would have done if only he had money, and as the film maker in attendance would make a movie of the same number. Divine!

VHS : Bugsy Malone
I remember watching this movie as a kid. It really has memorable songs, and cute aspects that make an otherwise violent subject (prohibition-era gangsters) humorous. It was cool finding a clean DVD.

VHS : The Beatles - Help!
I don't know why it took me so long to watch/purchase this movie. I am a Beatles freak and own every album and had seen Hard Day's Night, but until this reissue of Help! I just hadn't taken the time to check it out. But I have to say that I liked this movie MORE than Hard Day's Night. The gorgeous color and fun storyline were highly entertaining! This is my kind of movie. Quick little one liners, and funny little bits that if you blink you might miss them. Which also makes this film ideal for repeat viewing. The visuals are just outstanding, vibrant colors and great scenery! I highly recommend this film to even the most casual Beatle fan (if there is such a thing!!)

4.Oliver starring: Mark Lester, Ron Moody, Shani Wallis, Oliver Reed, Harry Secombe

VHS : Oliver
We watched this with our whole family. Our kids range from 15 to newborn and everyone enjoyed it! The young actor who plays Oliver is absolutely wonderful! His voice is straight out of the Vienna Boys Choir! The songs will be in your head for days, especially Oom Pah Pah!! Anyway, the cast is great, and the movie is well done and fun! Enjoy.

VHS : 200 Motels
Your level of enjoyment will probably depend on how much you appreciate Zappa and his particular brand of [...]. As a movie musical, it seems at times to be a parody of the genre while simultaneously stretching the form well beyond its normal parameters. There are a few genuinely hilarious laugh-out-loud moments, and I love the incidental orchestral music that accompanies and perfectly complements some of the scenes, but I was no fan of the Flo & Eddie era Mothers, so most of the band stuff does nothing for me. Well worth one viewing but I can't imagine wanting to see it again for a very long time: the last time I saw it was at a theatre when it was first released, 36 years ago, I believe; I could probably wait that long again.

6.Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969) starring: Peter O'Toole, Petula Clark, Michael Redgrave, Alison Leggatt, Siân Phillips

VHS : Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969)
Ive been waiting such a long time for this movie to come out on dvd. It wasn't the best musical but I found it very entertaining and Peter o"Toole is especially wonderful as always. Petula Clark is fine and touching and love her singing.

I first saw this movie in the theaters as a teenager, I took my little brothers and sister to see it and it was so good we stayed in the theater for a second showing. My friends and I that watched it when it arrived were all laughing and enjoyed the movie immensly. Something this good never goes out of style.

8.Immortal Beloved starring: Michael Culkin, Luigi Diberti, Rory Edwards, Hannes Flaschberger, Christopher Fulford

VHS : Immortal Beloved
This movie has achieved the daunting task of being good enough for its music. I don't collect many movies because, even if I enjoyed them, I don't want to sit through them again after I know the endings. This is an exception. The acting and filmography are so great (not to mention the music) that I enjoy watching it over and over, even though I know the surprise ending. So well done.

9.Stop the World I Want to Get Off starring: Millicent Martin, Tony Tanner, Georgina Allen, Natasha Ashton, Carlotta Barrow

VHS : Stop the World I Want to Get Off
Did you know that Anthony Newley never sold the film rights to Stop The World...? The studio's promotion notwithstanding, this Warner Brothers release (and the two additional versions that followed, with Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peter Scolari, respectively) are filmed records of the show in performance on stage. Newley was, in fact, so protective of this show and so concerned with the idea that it might fail to earn it's place in the musical theatre canon because of mishandling or misrepresentation that he twice refused to appear in filmed versions of the show. After the New York critics raved about him as an actor/writer (rather than writer/actor?) he obsessed that the show would be shrugged off as a star vehicle, useless without him. (Likewise, his followup show "Roar of the Greasepaint..." starred Norman Wisdom until ... Read More

VHS : Victor Victoria
For anyone who thinks that Julie Andrews is nothing more than a mere song and dance routine, or the voice behind that infectiously annoying `hills are alive' song I have only one thing to say to you; watch `Victor/Victoria'. I happened to stumble onto this film last night and I have thought of nothing else since. Sure, it has yet to be 24 hours but honestly, it is the ONLY thing that I have thought of since the credits began to roll. As a whole the film is adorable, but its strongest part is none other than Julie Andrews. Her astonishing performance is quite probably her finest moment (although I am very partial to `Marry Poppins') and she chews up each and every scene with her charm and grace.

Victoria Grant is a down-on-her-luck soprano singer willing to `sell her virtue for a meatball' when she runs ... Read More
