This British New Wave film is in the social comment style of A Taste of Honey and A Kind of Loving and it is one of the best of these films. The relationship between the two mates in the story has been misunderstood since gay liberation and so therefore has the film. The film is about the disillusionment of youth in the modern world. The story has two young mates enjoying the freedom of the roads on their motorbikes while facing having to grow up in the modern adult world. One of them gets married and finds himself entangled in the responsibilities of marriage, while the other (Dudley Sutton's character) is determined to avoid this fate and keep his motorbike and the freedom of the roads, so he has nothing to do with girls. However at the end of the film, when the two mates finally part ... Read More

Brian Gilbert's "Wilde" stands as a realiable version of the Irish writer's later years. Wilde's relationship with Alfred Douglas, Robert Ross, his wife Constance and many other characters is consistent, and agrees with reports left by contemporaries who knew well Oscar Wilde and his circle. Good performances by Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Michael Sheen and Tom Wilkinson. The latter, as the marquis of Queensberry, is outstanding - although portraying such a clichéed character is obviously a much easier task than, say, the ambiguity of Wilde himself or the never too well explained behaviour of Constance Wilde. Art direction is superb and manages to take us into the very rooms where action takes place in a most natural manner. Vanessa Redgrave makes a short apparition, though she fails to capture Wilde's ... Read More

I have never seen a film which so well captures the terror that is in the heart of a child who lives in fear of an adult caretaker. The director has worked a miracle here. She has enabled us to see the world through the eyes of an abused child, and it is not easy to watch, but it is essential viewing for all who want to understand child abuse.

The scene in which Jason Flemyng's character convinces his girlfriend to let him back into the house, where he will continue to abuse her son, is one of the most devastating scenes I have ever seen. The betrayal which the Mom does to her son... just beyond words. And so very real. This is an important film and it should be seen by everyone.

The entire cast is fantastic. But I do think that the director is the reason this film is so miraculously ... Read More

Surprise - it has nothing to do with birds!

This video explores Owen and Rose's family on three (four? Many?) levels.

Firstly, what a profound affect coming out can have, making me wonder whether it should be such an imperative. Sometimes keeping a secret might be the better choice.

Secondly, how difficult it is to lead a double life, being homosexual or bisexual in a straight marriage and how easily this fragile set-up can break apart.

Time Life conducted a survey in the 1980's that estimated that only between 2% and 3% of people are truly homosexual. The surprise conclusion was that about 32% of all people are bisexual, suggesting that there are many, many people out there who have to juggle this lifestyle very, VERY carefully.

Thirdly, it shows that homosexual ... Read More

I didn't really know what to expect with "Ma Vie En Rose", but this film was an enjoyable surprise. It was interesting to see a 7 year old boy, Ludovic, go through a gender identity crisis. Ludovic truly believes he is a girl in a boy's body or a "girlboy" and tries to prove it "scientifically" by explaining to his parents about God's mistake of throwing away the extra X chromosome in the "trash". Pam, a beautiful doll reminiscent of Barbie, is a doll Ludovic admires and "daydreams" and "escapes" with. This movie had comedic parts, but also painful and heartbreaking moments. Comedic parts come from the consistent imagery of Pam and also the open-minded granny Elizabeth. Painful parts come from Ludo's attempt to kill himself in a freezer, the intolerance from his neighbors and the parents consistent attempts to "change" Ludo's "7 year old ... Read More

This is my favorite Jarman film. I've seen it many times, and it gets more profound every time I see it. This film and The Last of England are Jarman's two greatest films. Jarman weaves his own personal, incredibly lyrical tapestry while shooting in 8mm, 16mm, video, and 35mm, and editing it into an amazing film. The film is essentially the Passion, except Christ is replaced with a gay couple. It is not told in a narrative sense, but in a meaningful, artistic way. It's Jarman's greatest film. Despite the subject matter here, this film (and Jarman's other work) are not strictly for gay audiences. I'm straight, and I really love Derek's work. I believe Jarman to be the most underrated filmmaker in British history. He usually gets identified as "alternative, gay filmmaker", but he's so much more than that. I hope this film will be released on ... Read More

This film is the best documentation of the Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969. Wonderful acting, writing, and direction, one truely cares for these characters as we know the inevitable outcome at the end of the movie. Some have said that the script isn't based on fact, but I have done a lot of research on the Stonewall Riots, and I have to say the script is pretty much accurate. There are some pretty intense scenes and some surprise plot twists as well. Sit back and enjoy a wonderful film on our gay history in America. The film is in full screen format as it was originally produced for BBC Television in Great Britain. The soundtrack is also superb.

Victim (1961)

BY ROGER EBERT / May 23, 2004

Recent critics find "Victim" timid in its treatment of homosexuality, but viewed in the context of Great Britain in 1961, it's a film of courage. How much courage can be gauged by the fact that it was originally banned from American screens simply because it used the word "homosexual." To be gay was a crime in the United States and the U.K., and the movie used the devices of film noir and thriller to make its argument, labeling laws against homosexuality "the blackmailer's charter." Indeed, 90 percent of all British blackmail cases had homosexuals as victims.

The defense of homosexuality was not a popular topic at the box office when the film was made, and director Basil Dearden tried to broaden the film's appeal by making it into a thriller and a police procedural. There is no ... Read More

How many people have led better lives thanks to dear Quentin Crisp? As a young fey gay man in the 1980's coping with AIDS and society that basically thought my friends and I deserved to die, Crisp was a gift from above. I read ALL of his books and he saved my life- not with gooey "gay is great" style PC posturing, but with an unvarnished wisdom that taught me the gay facts of life.

Like how I would never lead a normal life and that I should be gratful for that because normal life is bloody awful.

Crisp taught me not to be a slave to idealized romantic love that doesn't exist for anyone let alone femme queens like us. He taught me how to use my wits, he taught me how to behave and how to get invited to parties and get free dinners. He taught me the joys of Greta Garbo pictures.

He taught me to wise up and be fabulous.
