VHS : Shadowlands (1993)
When C.S.Lewis, author of such books as "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" was only a small boy of 9, his mother died and he learned that his only way through the pain and loneliness was to encase himself in an impenetrable shell, so that pain could not touch him. He leads an ordered, safe life as an Oxford Don, singing in the cathedral choir and lecturing to audiences of adoring women readers. When he meets American writer, Joy Gresham, her brash, New York, Jewish forthrightness almost batters him but luckily he summons enough courage to begin a friendship. He agrees to marry her so as to allow her and her son to remain in England and gradually she softens his defences and becomes part of his life as a platonic friend. When they discover that Joy is dying from incurable cancer, Lewis realises ... Read More

Tango Lesson
Is only for tangueros - it illustrates a one woman obsession
with the dance. Hence it's quite limited and you must
be very interested in Tango/Milonga to get anything from it.

VHS : Mayerling (1968)
I saw the 1968 version of Mayerling in April of 1969 at a base theater
while I was in basic training in the Air Force. I note this because the
subject of the film and its well-dressed actors and its European scenery
were so different from the military surroundings and military "dress"
which I was enduring at the time. I had not heard about the story of
Prince Rudolph and Princess Maria before. But suspected Mayerling's tragic ending from the start, but I think it did take the film a long time to reach its conclusion. However, I believe Mayerling was a visual delight and the musical score was beautiful too.
The cast was excellent with Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve along with
Ava Gardner and James Mason. To many the story of these tragic lovers
seemed unbelievable ... Read More

VHS : That Hamilton Woman
This is a typical London Films Korda classic of the time. While a beautiful and romantic film, much of the incidents portrayed in Emma's life are highly romanticized and inaccurate. Vivian Leign is her usually charged and bouncy self, and Olivier his usual stiff upper lip. The film becomes more a show of chemistry between these two famous actors of the time, with history loosely thrown in!

Vivian Leigh is all over this film, and while some find her bubbly manner charming, at times it can be annoying. I was half expecting her to go into her Scarlet bit while Olivier (Nelson) was being dragged along with the story. The production value is certainly first-rate, although a bit inaccurate at times. The film's music was certainly not period at all, and at one point one hears "A Life on the Ocean Wave" in the background, ... Read More

This is one of my favorite movies. The music is great. The acting is great. For me, everything is great except that it also has many sad scenes, however we have to understand that it is an interpretation of the life of Tchaikovsky.

VHS : Anne of The Thousand Days
I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it when it was released. What acting! Don't you love to hear Richard Burton's voice? And Ms. Bujold...her acting makes the part. Now for some good news I wanted to share. I went to the Universal Movie Studios website, actually to ask them when the TV series Centennial might ever be released on DVD (another absolute favorite of mine) and it says on the site that on Sept. 18, 2007 it will be released on DVD as a 2-movie collection: Anne of The Thousand Days and Mary, Queen of Scots. Did I make anyone else's day like reading that made mine? Hope so.

This is a movie for any fan of period stories, especially those interested in tales of love and romance. The performances in this film are exceptional. It's noteworthy that the love portrayed here is not only the deeply romantic love between a man and woman, but also the intense love between parent and child. It is a tremendous shame that this wonderful film is not yet available on DVD for American audiences!
