VHS : The African Queen
What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition
I think GEORGE LAZENBY is the BEST BOND EVER. Too bad that Albert R. Brocolli and Harry Saltzman decided to chuck this Australian car salesman, after his one-time appearance as James Bond. Diana Rigg IS the prettiest Bond Girl. Louis Armstrong sings: 'We have all the time in the world'. Telly Savalas makes a terrific Ernest Stavro Blofeld. There is a tremondous Ice-Skating sequence, that has yet to be repeated. Many viewvers even from India, would not have noticed the 'saree-clad', Miss India, among the array of 'Bond-girls'. Also this movie, unlike all the other movies, in the ENTIRE lot, is closest to Bond - Creator, Ian Fleming's Book.

I saw this when it was first shown on US television in about 1975 and was amazed by the storyline and the acting. I had seen Chamberlain in his TV series, but this film allowed him a vast range of emotions and exercises which the Tv show did not. I had not read the novel then, of course.

Relatively, this is the video version people should watch. I videotaped it a couple of times (once the result was not so great) and watch it sporadically since. The book I read in 1989 on a commuter train between Sunnyvale and San Carlos - commuter trains are great for reading! The many opinions about the relative merits of the book vis a vis this excellent film are true, BUT, given the time limitations of the film format, details have to be dropped. Oh, yeah, one of the days when I was reading the book three young ... Read More

I am so SAD about having to say negative things about this film. I'm a devout disciple of Ivanhoe, and a mesmerized fan of Anthony Andrews, so it feels like treachery to say that I've never been so disappointed in a film...What a CAST. But such meaningless drivel for dialog... True, this version DID include Athelstane, but to what purpose? He added nothing, he was totally incidental---well, blast it, WILFRED was incidental...And, bless her heart, that cute little girl didn't look remotely Saxon...And lovely Olivia looks more as if she's distressed and confused by the quality of the production than by deep love for Wilfred or impending immolation...By the time they tie her to the stake, she looks like she just wants out under any circumstance. I BELIEVED Elizabeth Taylor in the old version---I WANTED to believe ... Read More

I LOVED this movie when I watched it in the late 80s on VHS. Now, not only can't I find it on DVD here or anywhere online for this area of the world, but I can't even find a VHS copy anywhere. It seems like Australia and Japan and the UK have PAL versions available. Does anyone out there have any influence with the studio to make sure they release this on DVD for WORLDWIDE distribution?

Anyway, this was a fantastic movie, very different type of role for Julie Andrews (serious), quite well done. The setting in Barbados was magnificent, and the chemistry between Andrews and Sharif was really mesmerizing. I really want to see this film again. Anyone have any idea how to get it?

This video was exactly what I expected. I find it is more faithful to the novel in content and feel than the more recent adaptation. My sole disappointment was that I paid extra for overnight shipping, but did not receive the item in time to use in class as I had planned. It was a waste of money and a great inconvenience receiving this item three days late.

VHS : Cross of Iron (1977)
I saw "Cross of Iron" when it was in theatrical release in 1977 and thought it was a pretty good treatment of the German side of WWII.
I watched it again last night on DVD and found myself fast-forwarding past the dull spots. Since I have collected WWII German militaria, lots of little mistakes in uniforms and equipment jumped out at me. The most glaring was the imitation Reich war flag hanging in the background in the outdoor hospital scenes.
Coburn's performance holds up, but Schell's character is so broadly drawn as to seem malevolently cartoonish. And then there's Peckinpah's cliche treatment of violence by reverting to slow-motion when the shooting and stabbing start. It served him much better in "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid."
The art of the war film has matured considerably since 1977 and compared with "Saving Private ... Read More

VHS : 1492 - Conquest of Paradise
I go to movies for entertainment, and unless the movie has been touted as a 100%, bona fide accurate portrayal of the subject, then I have no problem if facts are embellished. This is Ridley Scott's vision of Christopher Columbus and his quest for the New World, and he has artistic license to create his vision and in my opinion did so magnificently with this film. I never got the feeling that Columbus was made a hero by this movie. The portrayal I saw was of a deeply flawed, brilliant man who did in fact commit great wrong against the natives, and returned to Europe completely demoralized. A broken man. And enough about Depardieu's accent. I understood him most of the time and even when I didn't, I still understood at least what was going on. I thought his acting was impeccable. The character of Moxica in particular was mesmerizing; the scene in which ... Read More

Seriously, this movie is not worth the more than 3 stars many people give it. Yes, give credit to Price for playing a vile character sans the usual "camp" factor, but that praise on its own makes neither his acting nor the whole of this film great. I found myself fast forwarding through several sections that would have offered nothing more if I let them play at normal speed. This type of "self-editing" we do on occasion with movies at home just goes to show some professional editing should have been done in the first place. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it should have been edited to the degree of a whole new film, that would better serve Price's resume and our viewing pleasure.

Some complain they don't know how this is categorized as "horror" -- I don't know where or if it is, but I don't think it was intended to be. Although the Witchmaker ... Read More
