When C.S.Lewis, author of such books as "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" was only a small boy of 9, his mother died and he learned that his only way through the pain and loneliness was to encase himself in an impenetrable shell, so that pain could not touch him. He leads an ordered, safe life as an Oxford Don, singing in the cathedral choir and lecturing to audiences of adoring women readers. When he meets American writer, Joy Gresham, her brash, New York, Jewish forthrightness almost batters him but luckily he summons enough courage to begin a friendship. He agrees to marry her so as to allow her and her son to remain in England and gradually she softens his defences and becomes part of his life as a platonic friend. When they discover that Joy is dying from incurable cancer, Lewis realises ... Read More

What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

Please, please stay the heck away from this dog. Basically, it's a bunch of street punks running around in diapers and women's makeup talking about "ultra-violence" that never really occurs, and the plot is even worse. This one gave me a massive migraine. I am truly not kidding about what this flick did to me! I remember watching it, hoping there was a point to all of it, but there truly wasn't. If you liked that massive WTF moment at the end of 2001 A space Odyssey, then this one's for you, since you'll get it. I sure as heck didn't, I actually grew nauseous at the end of this one. Right up there with "Natural Born Killers" and "Repo Man" in the badness scale.

I am so SAD about having to say negative things about this film. I'm a devout disciple of Ivanhoe, and a mesmerized fan of Anthony Andrews, so it feels like treachery to say that I've never been so disappointed in a film...What a CAST. But such meaningless drivel for dialog... True, this version DID include Athelstane, but to what purpose? He added nothing, he was totally incidental---well, blast it, WILFRED was incidental...And, bless her heart, that cute little girl didn't look remotely Saxon...And lovely Olivia looks more as if she's distressed and confused by the quality of the production than by deep love for Wilfred or impending immolation...By the time they tie her to the stake, she looks like she just wants out under any circumstance. I BELIEVED Elizabeth Taylor in the old version---I WANTED to believe ... Read More

Well, the movie is awesome, the second DVD is awesome, all the little extras on both DVDs are great. Of course the film is grainy and such, it was meant to be that way.

Now, this version is not as good as another. The Extraordinarily Deluxe Edition. It has the DVD and the second DVD. It also includes the old album that was released of the film ow on CD. It is packaged nicely (it looks better than this version).

I think it is kewl that they were adding in the Script, but it is already on the DVD itself. Plus if you just google, you can find it online very easily. So it really isn't worth it to have it included for this much. The Extraordinarily version is the one I recommend. It's packaging looks much better as well as aranged better, it has the extra cd, and it costs less. With the money you save, you ... Read More

This is one of the most wonderful stories of self actualization I have ever sen. It has humor, love, resentment, anger, regret, sadnesss, and finally redemption. Although many would consider this a "chick-flick", I think there is a lesson forus husbands too...keep the relationship alive and listen to your partener, she is far more complex than you realize. Relationships drift apart from lack of communication, so talk to eachother. That is the ultimate lesson of this heartwarming movie.

Another "Burton" at his best, "Becket" gives us a superb Peter O'toole as Henry II. No better acting than these two give us has Hollywood ever produced and it's all there in this increibly important film. Thought provoking and ethiically important. The comlexity of being human faces us throughout the two and a half hours. Would that Hollywood were still producing motion pictures of this quality!

The film is thoughtful and provocative. Set in rural Northern Ireland a century ago, Sarah is strong, fiercely independent young woman whose will cannot be bent by society, convention, the community in which she lives, the church or the men around her. She is an unexpected heroine - starting out inauspiciously quiet and seemingly timid, then eventually blossoming.

The film is quiet and thoughtful, slowly letting the characters develop and reveal themselves. The scenery is beautiful, showing the coastal area of Ireland in both dazzling and dreary splendor.

The film's characters challenge the mores of society. In some ways the world hasn't changed as much as it would seem, and Sarah still stands out as a rebel against the fate of a woman and how she is judged.

My daughter had to read the book for school. So we got the movie to illustrate the book. It's good to have both, but the movie holds up after all these years. Beautifully filmed in black and white. The boys act natural and are not overtrained. There is some interesting added footage to the film with on the set technical innovations and unknown film of the boys arriving in Puerto Rico.
We enjoyed watching this classic even if we saw it 30 years ago, it's a great addition to a classic movie library.
