VHS : The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries
Although most agree that this was a gripping storyline and a classic miniseries, there were some people that criticized Rachel Ward. I would like to point out the following:

1) She was extraordinarily beautiful, hard to look away from when she was on-screen. It was plausible that a priest or any other man would be drawn to her. I can't imagine a better-cast Meggie than Rachel Ward.

2) Ward did a remarkable job of portraying convincing love scenes with a gay actor (Richard Chamberlain). I do not know if the cast was aware of his proclivity. If nothing else, Ward's gaydar may have signaled her to the truth of Chamberlain's orientation. Both actors deserve credit for pulling this off.

3) The reality on the set was that Ward had found her "masculine ... Read More

VHS : Scarlett (Special Collector's Editon)
Great book. Written in sense of "Gone with the Wind." Good character development. Really saw the growth of Scarlet, from self-centered child to caring young woman. Always had the feeling, unlike the film, that it was Scarlet and Rhett. Set in Irish history background.

VHS : Rapa Nui
Note: Requires multi-region player to view in the America's.

Mythic tale of what life might have been like for the inhabitants of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) long before the coming of the white man. 'Rapa Nui' means, "navel of the world," a concept found at the basis of every archaic, shamanistic based society. Rapa Nui is a tale of young love fighting against the political, religious and social constraints of life at "the center." Noro (Jason Scott Lee) is a long-ear, a member of the tribal upper class and the Grandson of the tribal chief. He is in love with Ramana (Sandrine Holt), a short-ear and member of the lower class of laborers responsible for the carving of the monolithic statues required by the religious elite.

The chief agrees to let his grandson break the taboo and marry his true ... Read More

This movie is exquisite; Catherine Deneuve is so beautiful, her wardrobe so perfect, that it is hard to concentrate at times. When you see her whipping one of her slaves, you cannot fathom such cruelty and beauty together - but that is the cost exacted by colonialism.
When she chooses to use her influence to have Vincent Perez (Jean-Baptiste) sent away, I wanted to scream "no, no, don't do it, can't you see what will happen?" No man will choose a woman of a certain age, no matter how lovely and fascinating, over a young woman who can bear him children. Nature does not allow it.
The loveliest scene is when Jean-Baptiste is baptising their son in the pool; the most horrific the slave market which he witnesses and is supposed to be supporting.
As lovely as the cinematography is, I do wish the movie had been ... Read More

What an amazing movie! this is on my top ten list and will be there forever. My mom is the one who first introduced this movie to me many years ago, and now we watch it over and over again. I never seem to get tired of it. The love between Shannon and Joseph is a love everyone in the world wants. There are so many laugh-out-loud scenes that are hard to forget. I work at a video store and I'm constantly recommending this movie to cutomers. I absolutely love it =)

For those who appreciate British history in India, forbidden romance and swashbuckling conquest; if you could watch a 5 hour movie, then this is for you. You will find diverse characters, sumptuous costumes, fabulous horse flesh and parade dressed elephants in an exotic countryside of castles , palaces and battlefields. It is just possible to suspend disbelief in the elaborateness of the plot though the character of the leading man pales in quality compared to the lead women.

The history buff and romance novelist will regale; others may be daunted. Makes a good two or three night watch.
