VHS : The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries
Although most agree that this was a gripping storyline and a classic miniseries, there were some people that criticized Rachel Ward. I would like to point out the following:

1) She was extraordinarily beautiful, hard to look away from when she was on-screen. It was plausible that a priest or any other man would be drawn to her. I can't imagine a better-cast Meggie than Rachel Ward.

2) Ward did a remarkable job of portraying convincing love scenes with a gay actor (Richard Chamberlain). I do not know if the cast was aware of his proclivity. If nothing else, Ward's gaydar may have signaled her to the truth of Chamberlain's orientation. Both actors deserve credit for pulling this off.

3) The reality on the set was that Ward had found her "masculine ... Read More

One of the most well acted, well directed and greatest stories ever told. It transends generations. I've watched this movie every Easter since I can remember, and now my children carry on the tradition. This is one to add to the collection.

VHS : Resurrection
(*SPOILER WARNING*) Resurrection is loosely based on the experiences of Rosalyn Bruyere, a woman with expansive experience in energy based healing (She was also a technical advisor for the movie). Ellen Burstyn is absolutely realistic in her role as Edna, a woman who awakens from an accident in which she lost her fiance to find she has been endowed with a confusing blessing in the form of the ability to heal. As an agnostic, she finds this gift difficult to resolve, and her journey through her own healing and with others' expectations is interesting to watch. I would encourage anyone who is in the field of energy based healing to try to get their hands on a copy of this VHS, or at the very least catch it on cable, as it is shown periodically. It holds up well over time and I am still hoping the 'powers ... Read More

VHS : Mass Appeal
Excellent film, thoughtful yet entertaining. Not without flaws, surely, and in light of recent events the setting may obscure the story. And it's a good story, one I sorely wish was available in a widescreen DVD edition.

The story is, in fact, about flaws. Flaws at both ends of the spectrum. Youth explores its newly opened world, trying all of its offerings with abandon, testing its boundries, but at what cost? Age conserves its resources, adheres to the safer paths, braised in its own hindsight and supposed wisdom, but at what cost?

MASS APPEAL is not about those in or seeking power. The characters, like you and me, won't move mountains or shake the foundations of the world. But they wrestle with what's right and what's practical in deciding how they will affect the community ... Read More

VHS : The Mission
I watched The Mission in a class that I'm currently taking about the Literature of Human Rights in Latin America. The Mission is about the colonial time in South America and shows the treatment of indigenous people and human rights. If we really focus on this movie as a human rights oriented, we could see how the Indians were being treated by the Europeans. They would capture, slave them, exploit them, and the Indians have no saying in the matter; for the Europeans they were like animals, they have no voice, they were nothing. So they could do as they wished with them.
On the other hand there were the Jesuits who saw them as humans who needed guidance, understanding, someone who needed to be converted into Christianity, trying to save them.
I see this movie as a way to create awareness about the violation ... Read More

The West Was Won Warner Brothers Home Video has done a splendid job of

VHS : Lilies of the Field
This is one of my favorite films of all time, and I think the whole cast does a wonderful job of carrying the movie. It is the story of a group of German speaking nuns who need a miracle in order to build a church in a poor, desert town. The miracle comes in the form of an itinerant jack of all trades played by Poitier, whose faith is a little shabby around the edges. There is a lot of humor as the Mother Superior resorts to a little manipulation in order to see the church completed. Both Scala's character and Poitier's learn that they both needed to rely more on faith, and less on their own power. This is a movie for the whole family I think. It does deal with some issues on prejudice, and Poitier's character gets drunk at one point, but the Mother Superior sees that he does not enjoy the latter experience much. As for the way it dealt with ... Read More
