VHS : The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition)
The Jungle Book is one of those Disney classics that I never ever get tired of watching! It was the first ever Disney cartoon that my parents got me when I was a child. The characters in this masterpiece are wonderful and each and every one of them has a unique style and personality. Kudos to Rudyard Kipling for writing this beautiful story that will live on in our hearts for many years to come!

VHS : Tarzan (Walt Disney)
Somewhere in 2000, Disney quietly launched a special 2 disc collector's edition of "Tarzan" the same year as its paltry one disc edition. For some reason it advertised the one disc version heavily, which is a shame because the collector's edition is a gem not to be missed by fans. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until years after its release, and by then it was out of print, hard to find, and expensive. Luckily I found a copy that was decently priced, and was finally able to get my hands on this remarkable edition. I see this as the "Tarzan" DVD for adults: instead of cartoony illustrations on the jacket, there's Glen Keane's famous sketch of Tarzan peering at you with those intense eyes. The menus are extremely well designed and the commentaries are entertaining and insightful. It's ... Read More

VHS : Jungle Book (1994)
I haven't read the book, so I don't know how accurate the film is, but I enjoyed this version of "The Jungle Book". It's all about a grown up Mowgli's struggle to fit in with British colonial society, after he is lured out (more or less) by Kitty, a girl he knew as a child before he was lost to the jungle, a girl who just happens to be the local Colonel's daughter. Her boyfriend, a British soldier called William, doesn't like Mowgli at all, but he is however terribly fascinated by the golden dagger Mowgli found in the jungle...

It's worth a look. Sam Neill and John Cleese are both in the film, and I enjoyed their performances, I usually do when they're in films. Jason Scott Lee as Mowgli wasn't too bad either, though I haven't really seen him in much else. The Indian location was ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan and His Mate
1934's "Tarzan and His Mate" finds Johnny Weissmuller, the quintessinal Tarzan, in his second outing as King of the Apes, defending his mate Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan) from a variety of hazards. Southern California fills in reasonably seamlessly for Africa, while a zoo's worth of animals are either defeated by Tarzan in personal combat or led by him against vicious ivory traders and their savage allies.

As the story opens, Tarzan and Jane are accosted by two English traders, who intend to lure Jane back to civilization and to find and exploit an ancient elephant graveyard for its treasure of ivory. Tarzan proves to be the principal obstacle to both objectives. In a rapid-fire series of action sequences, Tarzan must face down hungry lions, charging rhinos, and rampaging tribesmen, ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan's New York Adventure
Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller), Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), and Boy (Johnny Sheffield) are living peacefully in the jungle when one day, an airplane lands nearby. Several hunters emerge in hopes of trapping wild animals, especially lions. Tarzan knows the danger of these men, so he warns them to leave, but Boy is curious about their airplane, and tries to befriend them. Seeing that they can use his repore with animals to their advantage, the hunters kidnap him and take him to New York to perform in a traveling circus. Tarzan will have none of their nonsense, regardless of the barriers between the jungle and the city. He and Jane venture to New York to find their son.

One would think that Tarzan in the city would make for a great film, but we have more camp than classic here. This is not unusual for a film in ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan (1943)
Tarzan the Ape Man is the first film of the most popular strain of the Tarzan series. The story is quite familiar now, so it seems trite and dull. However, this film is strangely entertaining although everyone knows what will happen in the film. Girl (Maureen O'Sullivan) goes along with her father on a trek to find the famed elephant graveyard and stumbles upon a man who lives in the wild like an ape (Johnny Weissmuller). The two are quite attracted to each other.

Johnny Weissmuller is not an incredibly attractive man although he is Olympically trained and very fit. He has incredible chemistry with the baby-faced Maureen O'Sullivan; all of their scenes are sexually charged which makes this film really good. The story is primally sexual but incredibly romantic at the same time.
