VHS : Escape from New York
Not really being familiar with the work of John Carpenter or the acting ability of Kurt Russell, I guess it can safely be said that I went into this movie blind. That, in many ways can be a good thing. I went in with little to no expectations and had no hopes about what I wanted to see. Little did I know that this movie would shock me beyond belief as to how genuinely good it was. Sure it was corny and sure, it was filled with the classic cliché's that we've become familiar with from 80's movies. That didn't make it less entertaining. In fact it made it even more enjoyable than I could have possibly imagined.

This movie had everything and more. It gave us suspense, a bit of horror, a chunk of emotion and a snippet of humour. They all blended together to create what eventually ... Read More

this film and others that resemble it fill a much needed void in filmaking and culture . i can see it's got folks pretty divided . that's entertainment . good , clean , dumb fun laced with a bit of womanly nudity . that last part merits the third star .

VHS : Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker
I've been a Batman fan ever since I was in diapers. When the Beyond series started, I was a little hesitant and didn't think it'd be that good until I learned it was from the same guys who did the animated series before and my hope was raised a little and after watching the first two episodes that started the show off, it became my favorite Batman show. Then when this first came out, I rented it immediately and watched it several times. I bought this because I had been searching for the uncut edition ever since I heard about it. At first, I didn't see what was so different about the movie I loved and watched like crazy when I was younger. But then it got to ***SPOILER ALERT*** scene where Joker was showing Batman what he did Robin and I'll be honest, I was a little disturbed. "You'd have been so ... Read More

Following the rise of the apes and some sort of man-made catastrophe (probably nuclear war) a community of apes and humans live together in peace. It's the evil human survivors of the nuclear war who still live in New York City who have an issue with the situation and all sorts of hijinks ensue.

Probably the weakest film in the series it is also the one that really requires the viewer to have a strong grasp of what went on in the other movies, especially Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Still, it IS good sci-fi!

6.Escape From La starring: Kurt Russell, A.J. Langer, Steve Buscemi, Georges Corraface, Stacy Keach

VHS : Escape From La
This movie follows Escape from New York, and it's just great. It's not meant to be taken too seriously. There are subtle jokes throughout the movie. A lot of it is tongue in cheek. So enjoy it for what it is. My favorite line is "This is LA, and this ****ing city can kill anyone!" There will be no Oscars, no awards given out for this movie... it's just mindless entertainment. You can tell Kurt Russell is having fun with the character. The whole movie is "over the top" and that's the point. Loads of fun, provided you don't take the movie, or yourself, too seriously. So lighten up, sit back, and enjoy!

VHS : No Escape (1994)
this picture easily cracks my top fifty favorite science fiction pictures . i've seen it a number of times now . the relative B movie budget makes what was pulled off here even more admirable . the cast is great . the story original and the execution very satisfying and gratifying . it's interesting to know that many folks evidently feel the film is just adequate . different strokes . my recommendation (for what it's worth) is that you buy this film . i'd wager you'll want to revisit this one as well as turn friends onto the smart glee .

VHS : Rollerball
"Rollerball" (1975) is a science fiction classic and the reviews of it should not be allowed to be defamed by those of the so called remake! I first saw this film when it came out, and it remains one of the few James Caan films I like. Moreover, the central themes--discussed in many of the other reviews--remain as important today as they were in 1975. While I cannot say with certainty that "Running Man" took it's cue from "Rollerball," I have always seen similarities between the two.

One of the true beauties of the science fiction genre is it's ability to make social commentary on the present and potential future at the same time. While "Rollerball" currently is not a professional sport or a "reality" show, I can easily see it happening some day. Certainly, it is well known that the stunt people reveled ... Read More
