VHS : Still of the Night
This is a good thriller with lots of creepy touches. Roy Scheider is a recently divorced Manhattan psychiatrist. One of his patients is murdered and both the police and the victim's beautiful girlfriend (Meryl Streep) who seems to be the top suspect contact him. There is an immediate romantic attraction between Scheider and Streep and Scheider attempts to solve the murder using information the deceased man revealed to him during his twice weekly appointments. The most important info is a disturbing dream which is reenacted on screen in a memorable and truly chilling manner.

The deceased and Streep's character worked together at "Christen's" auction house specializing in antiquities and much of the film is set in this affluent world of high end art. Manhattan at night is used ... Read More

I've heard about this movie for a very long time. I've always wanted to see it. But now that I have, I want my time back. The characters are frustrating to the point where they all needed a good smack on the back of the head. M. Emmett Walsh's acting was the one high point. Even if the script isn't clear about his motives, Walsh shows what a great actor he really is. I can't say the same for anyone else in the movie. I know the film makers were trying to be funny (burying someone in a plowed farm field is supposed to be humorous.) But the pacing is so slow, it's painful. The trailer quotes Alfred Hitchcock's line about it taking a long time to kill someone. But he was talking about the suspense, not about the stupidity of the crime. This movie is a perfect example of "Stupid people are more irritating ... Read More

Such films like this should be enshrined in museums, simply due to the fact it destroyed the entire genre of mystery films. While this film was unique and captivating, no other mystery will ever accomplish this sort of cult status, single handedly shaping a genre. While most mysteries try to shock you too often with twists and even more twists, it turns out to be overkill. This film encompassed such ideas with flair and originality, which is probably the reason Brian Singer is sticking to sci-fi action films. Only Memento and The Game are the only recent mystery movies worthy enough to stand beside this film. Sadly, Singer has somewhat sold out by doing the X-Men movies, but I guess trying to make films like this would be too taxing. This film will always bring a smile to my face when I watch it with someone ... Read More

Please people, this is great bit of fun. This movie cannot be expected to suspend your disbelief. Even though the director keeps tossing blood around, it is so far off that you can't possibly take any of it seriously.
It's a send up folks, keystone cops, over the top.... If you want a serious cops and killers, go back to TV, "Law and Order." My god the dialogue is fun, over done, a great party. Listen to it. Cut the film critic crap. You are showing your film naivete.

Robert Mitchum, Sylvia Miles, Charlotte Rampling, Harry Dean Stanton, Jack O'Halloran, John Ireland and Sylvester Stallone,among others - what a lineup. Of the entire genre of film noir, tough guy detective films, this one is by far the best. Mitchum is at his all time best, even though he's nearly sixty in this film (a bit old to play Marlowe, in my opinion, but he carries it off with absolute aplomb). He is the quintessential tough guy gumshoe Marlowe (he floors Dick Powell's previous characterization of the role), Sylvia Miles and Charlotte Rampling turn in flawless performances, and in fact Sylvia Miles received a well-deserved Oscar nod for hers. John Ireland and Harry Dean Stanton also gave marquee performances as well. Even young Sylvester Stallone is a surprise. But another one that stands out for me personally is ... Read More

The other reviews of this movie are way too kind. There is very little "steam" in this movie. Not a bad plot, but let's be honest, that's not why we watch these direct to video / cinemax softcore movies. Joan Severance does look good as usual. However, the erotica scenes are few and far between and there is virtually nothing more revealing in the unrated version so don't spend your $ here. Joan looks at her best putting on shiny white thigh highs underneath a tight yellow dress, but nothing happens with her and this luscious outfit. A complete waste. This is bound to disappoint so don't be misled by the other reviews.

I bought this DVD because I am a CSI/GSR fanatic. I run the GSRForeverLove wiki and tend to collect anything I can get with Jorja Fox or William Petersen. So, I had to own this film, boy I am glad I do.

The film is a hard one to 'get' the first time around, and I am not even going to get into the plot, except to say, it's original. I was enthralled from the start. Guy Pierce is amazing and delivers an outstanding performance. Nothing new there, I've seen him in other films.

My main reason for buying this was Jorja Fox, and even though her time in the film is short, she leaves a great impression, and the film is all about her.

I recomend this to any mystery fan, and to each CSI/GSR/Sara fan. It's a must own for film fans as well.

A loner (Johnson) drives into a small Texas town and gets himself a job at a used car dealership. He gets an idea for robbing a small local bank after he tries to open a new bank account at the same time a fire occurs nearby. The bank was left open while all of the employees went to fight the fire. The manipulative boss' wife (Madsen) wishes to use him for her own purposes - "I always get what I want, Harry". He resists, however, as he finds himself falling in love with the accountant (Connelly) at work, who has her own problem to work out. Written by Ed Sutton {esutton@mindspring.com}

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think this is the best work that the Wachowski Brothers have ever done. This is an awesome film noir, a film where you have no idea what's going to happen. I remember sweating bullets during it because, as an avid film person, I usually figure this stuff out. But this film kept me guessing until the end, which is something most modern films don't do.

Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon are awesome as the leads, and Joey Pantoliano gives a great, great performance as a deranged heavy that may lose it at any time. Many have made hay about the 2 lead characters being lesbians, which to me ultimately doesn't matter. The film itself is incredible tense and entertaining, and you forget about the fact that the two lead women are lesbians, even though the sex scenes are quite steamy.

For all of the fanfare of the Matrix ... Read More
