VHS : Francis in the Navy
This is the sixth and final film of the series produced by Universal that included Donald O'Connor, and director Arthur Lubin, who created the sequence. It would be charitable to state that this entry is up to the best of its antecedents, as O'Connor's tongue-tied routine as the chowderheaded sidekick of Francis the talking mule has become rather exhausting for audiences by the time of this release. Army lieutenant Peter Stirling (O'Connor) is advised by Francis that the mule has been "drafted" into the Navy and is positioned as surplus to be auctioned at the Coronado (Calif.) base. While attempting to regain Francis' freedom, Peter is mistaken for a lookalike bosn's mate, Slicker Donovan, is captured by the Shore Patrol and must then reestablish his correct identity while disinvolving himself ... VHS : Francis Joins the Wacs
When i watched this, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was still as funny as I remembered it to be. When I was younger, I was a fan of the Francis films, and watched whenever they came on TV back in the Fifties. When I found this one,it was like discovering an old friend and finding that though times had changed,it didn't lessen my appreciation for the films-or my enjoyment when I saw them again.

VHS : Francis in the Haunted House
When I met Mickey Rooney, even he said, "Terrible picture. Terrible picture." I can appreciate that this was at a low point in his professional career and yet his performance is wonderful, the plot breezy and the sets and lighting are moodily gothic. Add Richard Deacon in the supporting cast and you have a Francis entry that rivals even "Francis Joins the WACS". I think many had a hard time getting past Francis having a new sidekick- no Donald O'Connor. I wish this were on DVD!

VHS : Francis the Talking Mule
Peter Stirling (Donald O'Connor) is a former bank clerk turned soldier who finds himself cast in role of reluctant hero when he strikes up a friendship with Francis, an Army mule who can talk (voiced by Chill Wills, and played by a female named Molly). Ala Cyrano de Bergerac, Francis helps Peter to win the girl of his dreams, a shapely nurse named Patricia (Maureen Gelder). Unfortunately, the stubborn mule thinks mum's the word whenever Peter tries to tell others of the critter's gift of gab: This sends Peter to the psych ward more than once, where he becomes an expert basket-weaver. Several sequels kicked the Francis franchise into high gear, making for a memorably fun series of silly and cute family films. Based upon a novel by David Stern.

VHS : Francis Covers the Big Town
Frankly I was surprised when I wound up loving the Francis series. Knowing how great (and yet how under-rated) Donald O'Conner was, I was hesistant to see him in this Mr. Ed forerunner. I sat down prepared to hate the first movie and wound up being hooked and disappointed they hadn't made more of them. The mule is fun, but Donald and his comedic acting is the real attraction in this series. In my opinion, this movie is the best of the bunch. O'Conner can take a simple phrase ("Francis says goodbye, you're on your own." "My own What?") and really make it laugh out loud funny. Even an understated twitch of an eyebrow at the right time coming from O'Conner is very funny. He also makes you love his character, Peter Stirling, and emphathize when he gets into trouble...which is always! This series was a great ... Read More
