VHS : Miracle in Rome
I first saw this movie on TV and was so taken by it that neither my daughter or myself could leave the room to go to the bathroom while it was on, thinking we would miss something. It is a movie that the intellectually challenged would not appreciate, but it absolutely captures the intellect of anyone who thinks on a higher level than bingo. I immediately ordered it and found that the Spanish teacher was interested in showing it to her class. P Jensen

VHS : Fitzcarraldo
I will never forget seeing "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" some 20 years ago. It is to this day one of the most extraordinary films I have ever seen. Somehow "Fitzcarraldo" got past me, and I have been trying to see it ever since. It did not do for me what "Aguirre" once did, but this may have as much or more to do with my own shrunken state as it does with the film's limitations. If the film is "just" an historical anecdote, a story, then it cannot be faulted. The film is told well. It is filmed beautifully. It is certainly one of the weirdest things ever filmed; only Coppola's mad "Apocalypse Now" can match its audacity. What made "Aguirre" so extraordinary was its metaphorical power; its evocation not only of colonial South America and the lunacy of an adventurer's dream, but its powerfully suggestive ... Read More

After reading about this "great, classic, etc" movie for years, I finally laid hands on a copy and viewed it. This is possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. It almost seemed like a joke at times. I do love the arthouse movies, film noir, classics, and other non-mainstream cinema, but I honestly do not get the hype over this waste of time. Avoid it.

VHS : Rodrigo D - No Future
In an almost documentary style, Victor Gavina has created a remarkable film of life at the bottom in Medellin. Oppressed, disappeared, beaten, or killed by police, these children of the streets have little to do but rob for a living, [destroy] for sport or defense, drink beer and take drugs to pass the time. Rodrigo wants more, and imagines himself a drummer in a punk band. He spends much time throughout the film in a heart-breaking search for drumsticks and music lessons so he can pursue his dream.

Gavina employed many actual street children in his powerful film and informs us, in a final twist to the gut, that five of them were killed before its release. One can only wonder how many have died since. It is all the more important, therefore, that Gavina has bestowed upon them a humanity, humor, posterity, ... Read More

VHS : Don't Tell Anyone
'No Se Lo Digas A Nadie' ('Don't Tell Anyone') is probably a good PR line for this little film trying to be something grand. In excess of two hours director Francisco J. Lombardi makes an attempt to bring to life the autobiography of gay Peruvian talk show host Jaime Bayly and to explore the angst of teenagers and college students finding their way into the adult world. What results is a soap opera treatment that wades around in a lot of self-pity and wrong choices.

Joaquin Camino (Santiago Magill) struggles as a child with his terrible secret of attraction to boys in a home atmosphere of a macho homophobic father and a religious zealot mother. He tries girls, even a graduation gift prostitute compliments of his father, but he is unable to 'be a man' and after high school runs away from home. In college he mixes with the marijuana ... VHS : Johnny 100 Pesos
Another unknown but strong entry from South America in the crime drama category, Chilean director Gustavo Graef-Marino's Johnny 100 Pesos was a crowd pleaser at the Sundance Film Festival in 1994 (or 1995).

Soon after Chilean dictator Pinochet was finally booted out of office, the actual events on which this film was based occurred. 17-year old Johnny Garcia teams up with four small time crooks to rob the illegal currency exchange operation hidden behind a video store in a commercial office building in Santiago. Unfortunately, Johnny--not an experienced crook by a long shot--leaves lying around his ID card which leads the policia to the whereabouts of him and his cronies.

What makes this film a winner is the focus on the intensity of the events the director (also the script co-writer) brings to bear, especially Johnny's frenetic teenage psychology which ... Read More

This is one of the best movies I've seen on Peru. It is an excellent portrait of Peruvian society of the 1980s. It combines lyrical and epical tension in a way few movies are able to do. The characters are perfectly developed and acted by first rate actors. This is a perfect film to learn about Peru and at the same time to enjoy a beautiful movie.
