VHS : Gasaraki - Fires of War (Vol. 6)

Here is a quote from earlier in the show:

"I would prefer to not make inquiries into affairs that are already in the past. However, I will not sit by and let the seeds of future problems take root."

Just as Daizaburou Gowa questioned Kazukiyo's intentions for sending the TA's to Belgistan, I have to question Charles Solomon's editorial review of this volume.

Yushiro and Miharu traveled to Kyoto (in the previous volume) 'following the path of the kai' in order to learn why the Kugutsu threw away their power and abandoned their kugai, but more importantly to learn about themselves and their past. They reached Kyoto and they learned, so now we no longer need to lement over this 'path of the kai'. As a result, the story moves on, not losing any track of where it ... Read More

VHS : Gasaraki - To Be a Kai (Vol. 8)
Since the late 90's, anime has seen a huge flux into American mainstream culture. Gone are the days of searching obscure video shops for imports that had only subtitles or terrible voice-overs. Being an anime fan now is totally different that it was 5 or 6 six years ago. And so has the anime. America now gets bombarded with everything from Japan, and sifting throught it can be a challenge. However, once in awhile you can be rewarded, and Gasaraki is a reward for those diligent enough to find it, and watch it all. This is not an action anime, do not confuse yourself. If you want amazing action, then go watch Gundam Wing, which is an amazing anime in its own right. Gasaraki is a deep running series with excellent plot manuvering and towards the end the twists and turns kept me going right along with ... Read More

VHS : Gasaraki - The Circle Opens (Vol. 2)
Gasaraki is a futuristic, war-time tale utilizing "mechas"; or "Tactical Armor", as the weapon du jour. Gasaraki is an unfolding type of story whereas plot points are doled out sparingly and new characters are introduced frequently. Think war epics from the 1960's with dozens of movie stars as an example.

It is refreshing to see an anime that strives to be adult in a more geo-political and character driven way rather than by the over use of sex. The writers here worked very hard to create a refreshing storyline that creates a multitude of conflicts rather than focusing on a simple conflict as most animes do.

The plots are many encompassing not just the war, the politics, and social interaction but Japanese spiritual themes are included as well. A heavy use of Shinto religious ... Read More

I've been collecting this series since V1 and I still to this day wonder why. Few mech battles, very little story, and talk, talk, talk. This anime moves at a snails pace even compared to DBZ! "So why do you have 8 volumns, space?" I dunno! I just keep thinking this series is going to go somewhere and it isn't. If you like yakkedi smackedi talking go for it. Looking for a good mech battle, forget it.

The first thing you'll think when you watch this DVD it is: "What the heck are they doing with those robots". But by the fourt episode you will fully understand the story and will get into it.

I'm a fan of big robots and military stories, so if you're into this type of anime go ahead and get it. The main character is misterious and instantly drags you into the plot, and without you thinking about it you'll want to know what the purpose of the TA system really is. I give it four stars since the anime is a little too old for me.

Over all Gasaraki is one of the best looking anime of recent years and any fan of big robots and well chorographed action secuences will more than enjoy this series.

This series is almost irritatingly slow-moving. I say almost, because it never quite becomes slow enough to give up on it...and there are so many details to absorb along the way, that the several subplots would be vague to the point of meaninglessness if they didn't take their time explaining each one, at little bit at a time, as they went.

Overall, the animation is extraordinary, physical and mechanical effects are outstanding for anything less than a feature film, and the plot is both intricate and interesting. A truly one-of-a-kind achievement (notwithstanding those who will compare it to the inferior product Evangelion, which is much less complex, and appears to have been "dumbed down" so the under-13 crowd can follow along. Disappointing offering, that one; it had much more potential.)

This series is ... Read More

This DVD is definitively the best I have ever bought. This movie is a whole experience. I have watched it over and over and every time I enjoy it even more.

This series has the odd effect of not making any sense but yet still compelling to watch. Although some interesting things are answered on this DVD it asks far more than it answers. But the characters are starting to get deeper and not so wooden. The conspiracies are thick and nothing is what it appears. A healthy dose of mystery wraped in a large metal skin.
