VHS : Leonard Bernstein: Reaching for the Note
Reviewer Hadrian12's spotlight review says perfectly everything to say about this film. Thanks for that.

I can think of no more compelling 20th c. musician. Everything about Reaching for the Note is about the living lamp that is Bernstein's work, about the music he became; always breathing life, whatever his job. The film spends generous time with West Side Story, with a remarkable stretch of essential comments by Sondheim, Carol Lawrence, &Arthur Larents interspersing a cache of unbelievable rehearsal and performance footage. It's a master class in filmmaking, and we believe again how great a work West Side Story is. His symphonies, greater than the world knows, confirm the film's heart. In generous performance passages of the Kaddish Sym., the voice overs are subdued, as if in the live ... Read More

VHS : Janis
The first sight I ever had of Janis Joplin was in 1977 when I was 11 years old, and with my pocket money one day I bought a book, 'The Illustrated Rock Almanac'. The photos were tiny, but I marvelled at a woman who looked to be wailing like a wild animal - hair frizzy and flying, mouth open wide enough to swallow the rest of the 8 X 10 book! Then my first experience of hearing her voice was in 1980 - I heard 'Move Over' on the radio one Sunday lunchtime, and I could not continue eating my food! I hadn't heard a woman sound like that and I was enthralled. Then this film was shown on TV here in the UK and I finally saw Janis in action.

Now, all these years later, I am still awed by her power, soulfulness, humour and raw sensuality as a performer. This film is a joy for fans and a fine collection of essential ... Read More

VHS : Rhapsody in Blue
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) There is also a superb--I do not use the ... Read More

The sound quality of my VHS copy is fine (and believe me, I'm hard to please in that area). Yes, this movie belongs on DVD in Dolby 5.1.

The story is so good, you'll swear it is fiction. But it isn't. A country girl from the Australian outback who becomes a world-famous opera singer? Come on! But it's all true.

The first half of the movie is her struggle and rise. From sneaking off the ranch to an audition (of which her father vehemently disapproves) to her scholarship to study singing in Paris--except that the person she's supposed to study with knows nothing about this and refuses to take her. How she gets this woman's attention is priceless.

The meeting with the young doctor after her debut at the Monte Carlo opera. Her big night and no one to share it with! The doctor agrees to ... Read More

VHS : Great Caruso
All these years later, I still love him - and the story of the great Caruso is as tender and touching as it was fifty years ago. And, pardon me, but doesn't Mario Lanza make some of our present day tenors sound thin and reedy? I may have crossed the line there, but, for me, there is nothing like the robust, full, rich voice of Mario - singing all of our favorite arias. I learned to love opera through Mario Lanza - and, like Caruso, his life was too short. The story of Caruso is interesting - his rise from singing in Italian cafes to the Metropolitan Opera. Who doesn't love a rags to riches story? If you want a trip back in time - through a timeless story - get your hands on The Great Caruso - you'll play it, as I do, again and again. We are so fortunate that so many of these wonderful early films have been preserved.

I throughly enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to any one who enjoys good music. The plot was entertaining and you were hoping that his wife would win out in the end. A good way to spend a couple of hours.
