It has been a very long overdue to release this remarkable movie in DVD. A great film and very moving performance by Joanne Woodward (among her best performances along with her work in Sybil).

VHS : The Young Philadelphians
As a native Philadelphian, I found this movie supremely entertaining. For openers, the "Main Line" as alluded to throughout the film is not actually in Philadelphia. Rather, it was and is in the Western suburbs of Philadelphia...towns along the "main line" of the former Pennsylvania Railroad (now used by Amtrak and the Septa Regional Rail). These would include Villanova, Paoli, Swarthmore, Haverford, Radnor, etc. All very upscale and socially desireable communities. Rittenhouse Square (the opening when the wedding takes place) is in Center City Philadelphia. Also ritzy, but not Main Line. South Philadelphia is...well, South Philadelphia. The stereotypes are well-drawn, quite full of themselves and very over the top. Then again, maybe the rich really are that different. The acting is great, the ... Read More

VHS : Cool Hand Luke
I remember this film vividly because when I first saw it, it was at a cinema in Paris--and this was my first time in the City of Light!! Also I was on my 3 day leave from the Air Force and when I saw that famous scene when warden Strother Martin beat Luke (Newman) after he says, "Boss, why are you so nice to me?" to which Martin utters the famous lines, "What we have here is a failure--to communicate", it rang in my ears as an ironic twist to my days in Basic training. The late Paul Newman, who died just this last Friday, the 26 of September, lived and died like his character, Luke, in defiance but always smiling. His defiance was in what people had pegged him for--the handsome movie star with beautiful blue eyes with a classical face. Instead he channeled this defiance into helping other less fortunate ... I was extremely disappointed in the timeliness of the shipment.
I ordered it on May 5th. I didnt pay extra for faster shipment, but I did say that I needed it for Mother's day on the 11th. I understand that you cant guarantee delivery date but I was assured it would be mailed on Wed, May 7th. I didn't even get it the whole next week after Mothers day.
It wasnt delivered until the 29th. I could have walked across the country in that time.

VHS : Somebody Up There Likes Me
Director Robert Wise helmed the great boxing movie The Set-Up , a work scathing in its depiction of the seamy side of the sport .Somebody Up There Like Me takes an altogether more positive view of the noble art and is a thorougly entertaining biopic about Rocky Graziano .Graziano is splendidly played by Paul Newman making his second picture ,after the debacle that was The Silver Chalice,a movie that could have strangled his screen career at birth ,so bad was it .
Rocky was born in the slums of New York ,the son of a boxer whose own career stalled through several losing bouts with the bottle .In and out of trouble with the law as a youth and into young manhood ,encompassing a strech in reform school ,a dishonourable discharge from the Army and a spell in Leavenworth .Rocky eventually finds a route to success ... VHS : Long Hot Summer (1958)
I first saw this movie in black and white one summer when I was a teenager and I thought it was very steamy then. Now I'm a grandma and it's almost as steamy. I was a little disappointed the movie had been colorized...but Paul Newman is gorgeous!

VHS : Gone with the Wind
"Gone with the Wind" is a fabulous film, the film by which all others are gauged. It debuted in 1939, perhaps the year that produced the most high quality films of all time. Watching this film is like viewing a great painting. Every time I watch it I get something new. I also detect subtleties and insights I never recognized when I was younger.

I won't attempt to summarize this well-known film, because I see that there have been over seven hundred reviews before this one. I will tell you about a personal experience that some reviewers might find interesting.

Many years ago when I was a medical student, I spent three months as an observer on a psychiatric ward containing patients with mixed diagnoses. One of the patients was an inconspicuous old lady diagnosed as a catatonic. She simply rocked ... Read More

9.Hud (1963) starring: Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal, Brandon De Wilde, Whit Bissell

VHS : Hud (1963)
This movie stands in a class reserved for the best of best in western theme films. Based on the book by Larry McMurtry, "Horseman, Pass By", it also features a very credible performance by Brandon DeWilde as Lonnie, grown up from the little boy he once portrayed in another legend, the unforgettable "Shane" which was filmed about 10 years before. Lonnie worships Hud, who is his father's brother, and the realization that this man of his own blood is not of good character, is a concept too deep for him to grasp until the final turn of events mature him past his youth in the course of one day . The events surrounding this relationship are at the core of the storyline, and also at the core of the conflict between Hud and his old father, Homer, played by Melvyn Dougas.

Newman's star was at it's Zenith when he made ... Read More

VHS : Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Paul Newman was a true classic. In the old days, leading men were like old cars: dependable. Paul Newman did a lot of films, but Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a personal favorite of mine.

The movie opens at a wealthy plantation in Mississippi. There's a big celebration; Harvey "Big Daddy" Pollitt returns home to celebrate his 65th birthday. His son Brick (Paul Newman) is married to Margaret "Maggie the Cat" Pollitt (Elizabeth Taylor). Brick was once a college football star before he tore a leg muscle. Now, all he has are memories, a busted ankle, a drinking habit, and a crutch.

Big daddy (Burl Ives) is a big man with a ravenous appetite for food, pleasure, and fat cigars. He built up his wealth the hard way. Every scrap on his dinner table was raised on his land. He took a swamp and turned it into a pasture. ... Read More
