VHS : The McCourts of Limerick
"The McCourts of Limerick" has almost been an annual visitor to PBS television affiliate WNET viewers for years now, airing around the time of Saint Patrick's Day. It was quickly produced soon after the publication of Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes", and regrettably, has more of the production values of a typical home family video than the succeeding "The McCourts of New York". And yet, what a "home family video" this is from documentary filmmaker Conor McCourt, who excels in recounting the harsh, brutal existence endured by his father Malachy and uncles Frank, Michael and Alphie while growing up in the impoverished lanes of Limerick, Ireland. It is replete with much of the same mordant, bittersweet, and yet, quite hilarious humor which those familiar with the McCourt family saga have come ... Read More

VHS : Weather Underground
I was in law enforcement during this period of time. This documentary seems to be very well done, factual and accurate in all matters.

I am very excited to witness how our nation will change (my hope is for the better) during the next four years under the leadership of Barack Obama.

However, it is my hope that our "President-Elect", Barack Obama will distance himself from all former Weathermen members, especially William (Bill) Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn.

Respectfully,
R. Greenleaf - Utah

VHS : An American Love Story
When I started watching this film I didn't know really it would be so long, but I must confess I couldn't stop. It was already 5am and I couldn't take my eyes out of the screen.

Being a Brazilian, I grew-up in a country where the most normal thing is to see marriages in between blacks and whites, Orientals and whites, Orientals and blacks, etc. Even having an European background I do feel myself partly African, Italian, Japanese, Jewish, etc. All these people together with our native Indians built my country. I'm proud to be part of it and feel grateful for the extensive cultural knowledge I've learned from it. I believe we all are equal, doesn't matter if you're white, black, yellow, red or even blue.

This movie shows the live of a 'mixed' couple in a very sensitive, clear ... Read More

VHS : My Knees Were Jumping - Remembering the Kindertransport
This is a wonderful telling of the bittersweet history of one facet of the Holocaust. Melissa Hacker does an amazing job of weaving her very personal account of being the child of a Kindertransport survivor with the larger story of the project that saved the lives of a few thousand Jewish children from the Nazi deathcamps.

It just so happens that my family was friends with the Hackers in the 1970s and we even took a trip on the Rhine river together. Little did we know at the time the emotional weight that trip must have had on Ruth (Ms. Hacker's mother). But I write this as an ubiased viewer: my husband shed more tears watching this movie than I.

VHS : Pie in the Sky - The Brigid Berlin Story
Pie in the Sky is the story of a high-society girl (Berlin) who mortifies her parents with her willful self-destruction. I felt so incredibly sad for them. There is a chunk of our society that loathes the rich. Likens them to 'evil' as a matter of fact. Because they worked hard to earn their fortune and, you see, this is a 'bad thing'. So, Brigid's parents were very very wealthy, ergo, bad evil people (as the lib's will have you believe)and thus, there is no way Brigid can be held responsible for the path she was 'forced' to take. Oh, and the libs LOVE the victim. There was nothing Brigid could do to steer herself clear from a life of ...well, just watch her in Chelsea Girls to get a snapshot. I give credit to Brigid wherein by this documentary's end she DOES acknowledge that it was NOT the fault of her ... Read More

I loved this story and music! What a wonderful tribute to friendship, exploration, endurance of culture and talent.
It is hard to believe that the music I heard was coming from a human and not a mix of instruments. The human voice is amazing. Paul has overcome adversity to become an accomplished muscian, a blues singer, and a highly respected throat singer in the Tuvan tradition! He was very brave to travel so far into the far reaches of Asia when he could not see and had to depend on strangers as helpers.
The Tuvan people are amazing, so talented and so open and helpful.
Loved the music and the adventure.
