VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
I have the entire collection of the Carmichael Wimseys, and although I agree with the reviewer who said the actor doesn't meet my image of the character, I also have to say that he does grow on one with each succeeding play--and, because of it's vintage (970's), the series is in fact more like filmed theater, which makes it all the more enjoyable. By the time I got to Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise I enjoyed the Carmichael take on the character. I'm not sure quite who could play this role true to the author's version. The Edward Petherbridge Wimsey Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries (The Lord Peter Wimsey-Harriet Vane Collection - Strong Poison / Have His Carcass / Gaudy Night)was also difficult to engage with, but his version was also very good. Perhaps the character is so much a creature ... Read More

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of murder. What is worse is his brother ... Read More

VHS : After the Thin Man
There's more fun to be had in this 1936 sequel to The Thin Man.

Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy) are returning home to San Francisco just in time for New Years. Instead of the early evening they had planned, they are summoned to a family dinner at Nora's Aunt Katherine's (Jessie Ralph). Only after dinner do they learn that Cousin Selma (Elissa Landi) is missing her husband. And they can't go to the police and get their names in the paper. So a reluctant Nick agrees to find Robert (Alan Marshal).

The case seems to be over pretty quickly when Nick and Nora find Robert at a night club. But then the dead bodies start piling up. Can Nick sort this all out?

Once again, we have a fun mix of the comedic and the mysterious. While the climax is once again the "gather ... Read More

VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey - Murder Must Advertise
I vaguely remember watching Ian Carmichael as Lord Peter Wimsey when this episode first aired in the 1970s. Nearly 20 years ago I first discovered the joys of reading the Dorothy Sayers Wimsey stories and have read nearly all of them.

I just finished reading "Murder Must Advertise" when I purchased this DVD set. The only disappointment--I was well into the book before I realized that Peter Wimsey and Death Bredon are the same person--something that's obvious from the get-go when watching the DVD.

I also own the Peter Wimsey-Harriet Vane set starring Edward Petherbridge--but Ian Carmichael, for me, makes a far better Wimsey.

VHS : The Thin Man
An absolute classic! William Powell & Myrna Loy have perfect chemistry in this 1930's comedy/mystery. If you like tongue in cheek humor, this is for you. Nick Charles is a P.I. who marries wealthy socialite Nora Charles. Nora is wonderful as a first time sleuth, and Nick just tries to keep her safe. I love Nick Charles laid back charm, and Nora's go get'um attitude. Along with their dog Asta, you can't go wrong.

VHS : Shadow of the Thin Man
Nick Charles is walking in a park, his son in tow. He scans the racing form. Later Nick and Nora travel across a bridge but are stopped for speeding. Police and ambulances rush to the racetrack. A jockey was shot after he was caught cheating. Not as punishment, but to shut his mouth. Lt. Abrams asks Nick Charles for advice. An investigator was looking into a gang who was fixing the races. Nick and Nora go to a wrestling match and get a hot dog. Two heavy wrestlers put on a show. Then a man wants to go away; he asks for a lot of money. A reporter gets the keys to an office. Someone catches him, and they fight. Someone off camera shoots one of these men, and escapes. Lt. Abrams investigates this murder. Nick Charles explains what he deduces from the murder scene, and a laundry list. Was the shooting of that jockey an accident?

VHS : Prime Suspect 2
I bought my wife both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Prime Suspect series for Christmas. I had watched them at the time they were originally broadcast. Yet I was surprised at the excellance shown throughout each episode. As usual, the main character is a very complicated person. But this series adds an interesting element by introducing a Black officer into an all White unit, where he is definitly unwelcome. The parallel challanges to the main character and her new officer are very well done.
There is an interesting "did he do it or didn't he do it" element that has a novel twist at the end. I bet you can guess what I'm going to buy my wife for her birthday in March.
