VHS : 8-A
An excellent docu-drama of a seminal event in the Marxist Revolution's history. Capturing an internal Cuban crisis that occurred in 1989, Jimenez superbly blends actual footage with dramatized acting. In doing so, the film accurately depicts how Cuban dictator Fidel Castro purged a highly respected senior Army Officer that possibly threatened his rule. The execution of General Arnaldo Ochoa, COL Tony de la Guardia, and their two assistants, along with the incarceration of over 20 others, reveals the true nature of the Castro regime. Convicted of engaging in illicit transactions that were ordered by Fidel, the film shows how a potential reformer was used as a scapegoat to clean the regime's dirty laundry, while ridding itself of a potential threat to its rule. This film uses first hand information ... Read More

VHS : Death of a Bureaucrat
If you've ever been bounced around a bureaucracy like some kind of human pinball, you'll be able to relate to this movie. And since most people have, this movie probably would have a wide audience that it appealed to. See, this film is about bureaucracy - be it communist, capitalist, or otherwise. But make no mistake- it's not a film about communist bureaucracy. It just so happens that it is set in communist Cuba.

The movie is funny in an absurd sort of way, kind of like Luis Buenel's movies. If you like those kinds of movies, this one may be for you.

I gotta say, it's also a bit of a nail biter, but not in the horror movie kind of way. More in the way of "Well, what's the protagonist going to do now?" or "How's he going to get out of this mess?" That just makes the film better. ... Read More

At the late Fifties an anonymous village in Los Andes, feels altered its calm among the teacher and the butcher, who were most affectionate friends and partners of political fights. The warden profits by the facts and gets the collaboration of the police; excellent opportunity to tithe the opposition.

In the eighties, Colombia had an abrupt explosion of creativity, supported by a talented crowd of filmmakers, actors and screenwriters. Get close to this unusual picture, and be surprise.

VHS : Strawberry & Chocolate - - Subtitled in English
I won't bother with plot points and such since lots of other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that this film is definitely worthy of the accolades and positive reviews it has received. I was particularly struck by the performance of Jorge Perugorría as the gay artist Diego. Perugorria's performance draws you in whether he is being sly and bitchy or indignant and passionate. His unrequited love for David (Vladimir Cruz) is both sweetly naïve as well as crushingly sad. I won't give away the final scene, but I will say that without Perugorria's stellar performance throughout the film it would have been a less powerful moment.

But the film is more than just a gay man's infatuation with a young Marxist; it is also about the struggle of contradictory ideas and opinions in a world where the view ... Read More

I was looking for a video of this short story by Marquez because my high school class was reading it in school. I borrowed the tape from a local library before I bought it to see if we wanted a copy in our library.
I thought the movie was very true (overall to the author), and I enjoyed how closely the director kept to the story, but then the second half changed dramatically from the first half, so much that I became very thankful that I previewed the tape before I showed it to my class.

There was quite a bit of profanity in the second half, AND there were several sexual scenes that could not be shown in the classroom. These scenes were not in the short story, so I guess they were added to give some spice to the video, but I thought it was very unnecesary, and of course, now my students can't enjoy it ...
