This movie is to K-Pax as the remake of Solaris is to the original. This movie has haunted me for years, ever since I first watched it. I am not wild about some of the scenes toward the end, but the scene with the brain at the sink is one of the best of all time. Is Rantes mad? Or is he telling the truth about himself? This movie really deserves to come out on DVD.

VHS : I Don't Want to Talk About It (VHS)
This is a delightful film by Argentine director Maria Luisa Bemberg (who directed her first film at age 56! - an inspiration to us all). The movie takes place in a small Argentine town by the name of San Jose de los Altares, some time in the 1930s. Like most small towns, it is a place filled with hypocrisy and gossip. When the movie opens, the camera catches the town priest without his pants (literally) in bed with his mistress, and we soon discover that the brothel is the place to go if you're looking for the mayor or other important town figures. Despite their peccadilloes, the town folk strive to keep up appearances. It is in this environment that Leonor attempts to "hide" the undeniable reality that her daughter is a dwarf. Leonor insists that it never be mentioned and attempts to compensate ... Read More

Saw this film at the San Francisco Film Festival and it got rave reviews but very little distribution. I always have wondered why as everything about this film is great, acting, story, setting, and its reason for being. Alas the video is too expensive as I would love to have it in my collection.

This was an interesting visual film set in Argentina in which the illegitemate son of a wealthy landowner finds a mentor in an old gaucho. Very slow paced but worth the scenery of Argentina.

I watched this movie on HBO a long time ago and I found the suspense to be intriging. This movie keeps you guessing and with a surprise ending.

This is the first movie I watched with Ricardo Darin. I then checked out other movies he has done and have enjoyed most of them. The only problem in the Stranger is that his role is somewhat small when he is the best actor in the movie.

I hope this comes out on DVD in the near future.

I was looking for a video of this short story by Marquez because my high school class was reading it in school. I borrowed the tape from a local library before I bought it to see if we wanted a copy in our library.
I thought the movie was very true (overall to the author), and I enjoyed how closely the director kept to the story, but then the second half changed dramatically from the first half, so much that I became very thankful that I previewed the tape before I showed it to my class.

There was quite a bit of profanity in the second half, AND there were several sexual scenes that could not be shown in the classroom. These scenes were not in the short story, so I guess they were added to give some spice to the video, but I thought it was very unnecesary, and of course, now my students can't ... Read More

Finaly a documentry with real danced Argentine tango with normal people, realy improvising on the music. Not everything I like in this video, there is a part with Ballroom tango and a choreographed dance (orgenised by an american program for latino's) that misses the point, but I like realy the end, a ballet , but it is beatifully danced in real Tango stile, that means heavy, down to the ground.
