VHS : Boca
I agree with one reviewer here who says that the characters of Boca himself, the brutal gangster, and his feral Brazilian mistress - they are the jewels in this film. One of the most memorably erotic movies I have ever seen. I wish, like another reviewer, that it would come out as a DVD. I'd snap it up in a second.

VHS : Highway Patrolman
I initially found out about this film from a trailer years ago in a small art house theater. The trailer showed a Mexican state patrolman desperately trying to make it up a hill towards burnt car wreckage dragging a damaged leg, clutching a huge assault rifle. "New Film From Alex Cox": I knew it was at least worth checking out. The theater release sank quickly, but I tracked down a VHS copy, and was amazed by how good this movie is. It's a "small" film, directed in Mexico with a Mexican cast (English subtitles) and the help of his Mexican-born wife. The story centers around a young rookie highway patrolman attempting (and sometimes failing) to lead an ethical life in a sometimes unethical world. A humane portrait of people living under pressure. This film's worth seeing just for the ... Read More

VHS : I Don't Want to Talk About It (VHS)
This is a delightful film by Argentine director Maria Luisa Bemberg (who directed her first film at age 56! - an inspiration to us all). The movie takes place in a small Argentine town by the name of San Jose de los Altares, some time in the 1930s. Like most small towns, it is a place filled with hypocrisy and gossip. When the movie opens, the camera catches the town priest without his pants (literally) in bed with his mistress, and we soon discover that the brothel is the place to go if you're looking for the mayor or other important town figures. Despite their peccadilloes, the town folk strive to keep up appearances. It is in this environment that Leonor attempts to "hide" the undeniable reality that her daughter is a dwarf. Leonor insists that it never be mentioned and attempts to ... Read More

This movie is to K-Pax as the remake of Solaris is to the original. This movie has haunted me for years, ever since I first watched it. I am not wild about some of the scenes toward the end, but the scene with the brain at the sink is one of the best of all time. Is Rantes mad? Or is he telling the truth about himself? This movie really deserves to come out on DVD.

This movie has long been among my favorites. Had it been in English it would get 5 stars. It is this reading that takes away from the beauty of the film. Gritty and real. For me, knowing the story, I really don't have to read, and I can focus on the unusual Beauty. There are some flaws but what it clearly does is gives you a sense of place. You ARE in Rio during carnival....and if you can watch this movie without once getting on your feet...you just don't get it. Enjoy!!

I'd love to own this film but refuse to buy anything on VHS. Even if it is a Sonia Braga film.

I have to agree with the positive reviews on this movie. I saw it several years ago, I think on PBS. It was so long ago I can't be sure but what I am sure is this movie continues to haunt me to this day. With the problems about the rendering to DVD, I hesitate to spend $86 and wait only for a better price or a better rendering. The producers and directors of this movie had enormous vision and created a world so alien to us that it pays respect to those characters in history, both Spanish and Native. It should not be missed or forgotten.

VHS : The Official Story
La Historia Official is a well-made film about awakening from passive complicity in evil, in this case, forced adoption. The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo were and are an inspiration to those who struggle to uncover and resist abuses in adoption practices, be they the enslaved Irish women of the Magdalen laundries or the many indigenous peoples who had children forcibly removed from homes to be adopted by whites. Most of adoption does not involve abduction, but to turn a blind eye to the fact that it does exist, is to be passively complicit, as was the protagonist in this film.

The scene in which the teacher realizes that tremendous evil has indeed been perpetrated, and that she may very well be the beneficiary of such evil, is staggering. Norma Aleandro is a talented enough actress that we believe her ... Read More

I won't bother with plot points and such since lots of other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that this film is definitely worthy of the accolades and positive reviews it has received. I was particularly struck by the performance of Jorge Perugorría as the gay artist Diego. Perugorria's performance draws you in whether he is being sly and bitchy or indignant and passionate. His unrequited love for David (Vladimir Cruz) is both sweetly naïve as well as crushingly sad. I won't give away the final scene, but I will say that without Perugorria's stellar performance throughout the film it would have been a less powerful moment.

But the film is more than just a gay man's infatuation with a young Marxist; it is also about the struggle of contradictory ideas and opinions in a world where the view is rigidly ... Read More

VHS : Danzon
I would advise any cinefile with a human heart and an appreciation of true art to disregard all reviews (including this one), watch the movie, and judge for himself; lest he miss a unique and uniquely profound experience.

The film is a timeless thing of beauty, strikingly original, grounded in true human-ness, at times moving, at times bitter-sweet, but always real; and it leaves no trace of current cockamamie ideologies about women or other political korrectness: it is about real life, or sober fantasy.

Directed by a woman, most definitely not a "chick flick". The furthest thing from a "romance novel", though many superficial viewers seem unable to tell the (huge) difference. I would also say that it is sex-neutral. It says as much to men as to women. (I am one of the former, and no sentimentalist.)
