VHS : A Town Like Alice
I loved this series, when I first watched in on television back in the '80s. Every couple of years I pull the tape off the shelf and re-watch it.

This is not just for Bryan Brown fans, but for the Gordon Jackson fans in the crowd. Jackson's portrayal of a man who falls in love too late in life, is very touching.

I would love to see it available on DVD!

Many think that Sean Connery was the first actor to impersonate the role of the sophisticated British agent; when in fact he wasn't. Sean was the first actor to play bond in a "theatrical" movie. But in 1954, 8 years before Dr. No hit the screens, 007 was introduced for the first time on Television broadcast.

The movie was called Casino Royale, based on the first novel by Ian Fleming. The movie was adapted from this novel for a CBS broadcast, with the hopes of adapting more of Ian Fleming's novels on TV...but the broadcast was pretty much bashed by critics and ignored by viewers. The movie was broadcasted only once and lost. It was later found and re-broadcasted in the 1990's for TBS, part of a James Bond movie marathon. Thought the problem with that version that was re-aired was that it ... Read More

4.It's a Wonderful Life starring: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, Henry Travers

VHS : It's a Wonderful Life
Frank Capra's meditation on the connections each man builds to those around him is the pure, distilled essence of holiday spirit. In a world that's forever beating us down with reminders of our isolation and of the lack of meaning in our lives, this is a bright and shiny rebuttal.

I don't know that anyone but Jimmy Stewart could play the nice guy who always does the right thing and inject that character with the darkness necessary to turn a schmaltzy premise into a profound statement of each man's place in his world. A great supporting cast (including Thomas Mitchell, Gloria Grahame, Ward Bond, Henry Travers and Beulah Bondi) led by a brilliant director. Nicely remastered print. And while the extra features were just lifted from 80s TV broadcasts, they do have interesting information in ... Read More

VHS : Quo Vadis (1951)
Quo Vadis is one of those large scale biblical epics that has withstood
the test of time. and as they did with special edition dvds of Ryan's
Daughter, Dr. Zhivago, Mutiny on the Bounty, Grand Prix, Ben-Hur and How
The West Was Won Warner Brothers Home Video has done a splendid job of
restoring and remastering the film. but why the break??? a 2hr.52min.film
can easily fit on one side of one disc.

VHS : Five Graves to Cairo (1943)
This WWII movie is an unexpected delight, although coming from Billy Wilder the unexpected should be expected. The action in Five Graves to Cairo takes place in a flea-bitten, mud-brick hotel on the edge of the North African desert. It's 1942 and Tobruk has fallen. Rommel and the Afrika Corps are driving toward Cairo and the only thing that can stop them is a lack of supplies. The English are worried. The Egyptians are testing the wind. And Rommel seems to be supremely confident. "We shall take that big cigar from Churchill's mouth and make him say 'Heil'!" he says with a smirk. He has reason to be confident. "It's not the supplies which reach us," he says. "It's us who reach the supplies...thousands and thousands of gallons of petrol..." and water, ammunition and food. The only things that can stop him is ... Read More

VHS : Roman Holiday (1953)
Possibly my favorite romance of all time, ROMAN HOLIDAY is a heart-wrenching, charming and timeless tale of a young Princess Ann(Audrey Hepburn) who runs away and ends up in the arms of wise newspaperman Joe Bradley(Gregory Peck).

Of course through a handful of events by random happenstance Joe and Ann fall in love, and their chemistry is really beautiful.

"Do you have a silk nightgown with rosebuds?" "I haven't worn a nightgown in years!"

Gregory Peck is a dream, and Audrey Hepburn is simply stunning in her oscar-winning performance. In addition, Eddie Albert adds the perfect amount of 'comedy relief'.

It's one of those movies that you never feel the desire to fast-forward through and the end will make your heart shatter no matter how many times you have ... Read More

VHS : The Devil's Widow (Tam Lin)
I really wish a DVD existed of this movie! In 1972, I was channel-surfing in the middle of the night and came upon an airing of Tam Lin, halfway through the movie. I was 19 then, and the movie seemed mystical and surreal to me; for quite a while I could not figure out what was going on except it involved Janet and Ian and Ava and ominous overtones, and I was blown away. As the movie neared the end I recognized the Tam Lin theme, but the movie was shown under the Devil's Widow title and "modernized", although the music seemed to have appropriate medieval overtones...but I never made a firm link to Tam Lin until years later ...and I never saw the movie again. But I'd like to, because it seemed to me that it suceeded in conveying the atmosphere of Faerie and the glamor (in its old sense) that confuses and enthralls mortals ... Read More

VHS : The Eagle and The Hawk
1930's movies are a hobby for me. I have seen thousands. It is obvious that the overwhelming majority were made for one purpose-- to maximize profits. To do this they were "designed" to give the public what it wanted--and still wants, i.e., bigger than life movie stars, a few endlessly repeated popular themes, shamelessly uncomplicated scripts, formula directing. In the 30's, they were the ultimate mindless escape entertainment for hard times. For these reasons (and the black and white, 4:3 format), most of my friends think I am wasting my time with these "old movies." I can't really defend myself and don't try. I am having a good time.

The Eagle and the Hawk is different from what I just described. It isn't a great, but it is a far better movie than the standard fare today. Roger's and Miller's screenplay was ... Read More

VHS : To Catch a Thief
This is a light Hitchcock movie, probably not one of his greatest, but pretty close! The film does not focus on murder or mayhem or even tragedy. It is all about stealing jewels! If you thought that jewel thieves were interesting, this is your movie. If not, here the movie grows on you and you won't care about it being about jewel thieves. The acting is superlative and funny. It is not made in a serious manner and that is great. The movie is about being on vacation, seeing the French Rivera and being with wealthy people who have their jewels stolen. It's fun and light.
