VHS : Paris Is Burning

I found it entertaining and interesting from a historical prospective, with a few interviews that allowed a glimpse of the real person, otherwise not much substance. My feel was that the way they approached was from a voyeuristic angle rather than one looking to gain insight.

2.Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories Of Lesbian Lives starring: Keely Moll, Stephanie Ozard, Ann Bannon, Reva Hutkin, Lois M. Stuart
directed by: Aerlyn Weissman, Lynne Fernie

VHS : Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories Of Lesbian Lives
This is really a fabulous movie--a great companion to the excellent production of the "Beebo Brinker Chronicles" just closed in NY--a dramatization of this important period of lesbian life--the 1950's, a time of odd "freedom" and horrendous repression.

The film is humorous, wise, and informative--very well made. A classic.

3.Living Proof: Hiv & Pursuit of Happiness directed by: Kermit Cole

My name is Chris and I was one of the kids featured in this video 10 years ago. I just want to say after reading some of the reviews of this video I am very glad that I did it. It's very diffucult for me to watch it as I was going through some very difficult things at the time but the fact that others have found the strength to deal thier sexuality through this video makes me vey glad I did it. As an update, my family is very supoortive of me and my boyfriend and things do get better for you. Youjust have to have faith and hang on.

5.Together Alone starring: Terry Curry, Todd Stites

VHS : Together Alone
This movie is not for everyone especially the multiplex type of movie goers. It's a minimalist style of dialogue and characters' conversation after their one night stand. The conversation touches from coming out, self discovery, and sexual identiy. It's worth to explore such conversations if we ever look inside of ourselves.

VHS : Boys Shorts
The films in Boys Shorts are, to be blunt, boring. I found myself fast forwarding looking for the next bit of dialog or human interaction. A few of these directors have fallen into the arrogant trap of believing that their work is so good that it needs neither plot nor momentum. It's not.

My advice is to leave these shorts to their owners. They are from the early 90s, and feel even older. They will never become classics. They feel like film school projects. Several of them might well garner an A from the teacher, but none are worth public exhibition. Save your money.

9.Looking for Langston starring: Ben Ellison, Matthew Baidoo, Akim Mogaji, John Wilson, Dencil Williams
directed by: Isaac Julien

VHS : Looking for Langston
In mainstream gay cinema, the images of the black gay man is somewhat controversial and contrived. Often, he is portrayed as the overly effete stereotype. For the sake of the dollar and to appeal to cross-cultural fetishistic interest to reach a wider audience, he is often shown preferring and seeking out the attentions of white gay men. Writer-director Isaac Julien's LOOKING FOR LANGSTON represents a departure from the status quo of the image of black gay men while also attempting to reclaim the black gay identity and history that only now is beginning to be widely acknowledged by the general black community.

LOOKING FOR LANGSTON can best be describe as impressionistic film-making. The film does not really follow any type of linear storytelling that the average movie viewer will expect. ... Read More
