VHS : Monty Python's Life of Brian
A lot has been said and do not wish to repeat it. In my mind this is by far the most complete and timeless of the Monty Python classics ... I personally love The Meaning of Life but it resonates mostly with those coming of age in the 70s and early 80s as many of the topics were current then (sex education, antiwar sentiment etc).

Life of Brian will never lose its appeal but it requires a copy with English subtitles even for native English speakers to catch all the brilliance.

It is moreover an essential piece of work in bringing about religious understanding and tolerance. Whether you are a believer or not it is healthy in a free society to challenge the very institutions they are built on and remind us all not to take anything too seriously. Those who find it offensive are ... Read More

This is a collection of the very first season of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Included in this boxed set are: Famous Deaths, Man with Three Buttocks, Flying Sheep, Nudge Nudge Wink Wink, Undressing in Public, Confuse-A-Cat, and Silly Job Interview and that's just the highlights!

These comedy shows aired in Great Britain in 1969 and the humor holds up astonishingly well. These guys are just as odd now as they were when they first started and these comic riffs rely on universally funny things such as nudity, death, humiliation, insanity, TV programming, government and history. It's a bit like a medieval morality play gone wrong with young men dressing as old women. Really cheesy sets and totally un-special effects combine with inspired writing and timing to produce something that became a cult classic.

VHS : Monty Python's Flying Circus, Season 1
This collection is a must for Monty Python fans. I didn't realize how many of their classic sketches were in the first season. I loved this collection so much that I bought the next one also. I only wish that I had more time to watch them.

VHS : Monty Python's Flying Circus - Season 3
Many have criticised this final season (of about six episodes) as inferior to the first two of "Monty Python's Flying Circus". It has been said that the writing had suffered, as did the execution into skits, by the departure of John Cleese. John Cleese only appears in the persistently overwrought introductions to the episodes whilst standing on the scaffolding (the intro with him in the bikini is better). Perhaps true, these episodes are an important contribution to the Python ouvre. Sketches were sometimes drawn out into full episode length, foreshadowing Michael Palin's great, short series "Ripping Yarns", and we mustn't forget that the guys were also working on "The Holy Grail" at this time. So what if Season Three lacks classics like the Parrot Sketch, Not Being Seen, or the Little Old Ladies? The History Of Ballooning ... Read More

VHS : Monty Python's Flying Circus - Set 5 (Epi. 27-32)
I must offer kudos to A&E. Before these DVDs, all I had were 12-year-old VHS copies of Flying Circus dubbed off MTV. They were dull and noisy and these DVDs look much better.

Unfortunately, due to the glut of gaffes and omissions in this 45-episode box set, I am forced to keep those VHS tapes as reference copies for several episodes that A&E have unintentionally - and, in at least one case, intentionally - adulterated.

For the uninitiated, here's a laundry list of some of the omissions and gaffes in this set:

Show 31: Line "Masturbating" censored. MTV managed to find an uncensored version - A&E should have done likewise.

Show 33: Dialogue snipped from "Biggles Dictates a Letter". Not censorship, just a jump cut. Major QC goof.

Show 38: EVERYTHING after Eric Idle's "Next ... Read More
