VHS : Underground Railroad (History Channel)
One of the most general perceptions that I received from my high school history days in the 1960's concerning the fate of black slaves in America was that they essentially passively waited for the Union armies to free them during the process of the Civil War in the 1860's. In short, blacks had no pre-history as a people who struggled for freedom in their own right but were merely the victims of history. Of course, since those days I have made it my business to find out the real story of slave resistance and although there are many parts that are lost to history we now know that as least some slaves in some situations found ways to break their bondage. Aided during the past few decades by serious scholarly research into the subject we have a more rounded view of the dynamics of slavery in ante ... Read More

VHS : Great Blunders of WWII
Great Blunders of WWII is a fabulous 2 disc set from The History Channel portraying some of the most memorable blunders made by both sides during the second world war. These blunders include: The German failure to destroy the allied forces at Dunkirk, Hitler's declaration of war on the U.S., The pilot who bombed London, mistakes of the Luftwaffe, Hitler's blunder at Stalingrad, The failure of the plan to invade Britain, Japan's mistakes at Midway, and a few others.

There's 8 roughly half hour episodes, plus an additional four "bonus blunders" (including the bomb plot to kill hitsler and the mistakes of the battle of the bulge) - a total of 10 episodes for over 5 hours of WWII blunder goodness.

The Series is Narrative in nature, using archival footage and occasional graphics for ... Read More

VHS : Inside Islam (History Channel)
"Inside Islam" was produced within a year of the 9/11 attacks, with the goal of educating Americans about this often misunderstood faith. In some ways, I'd say it was successful, but in others, it fell short.

It does explain the origins of Islam and the story of the prophet Muhammad, who founded the religion and guided it in its early days. The viewer also learns about the "Five Pillars of Islam," the split between Shia and Sunni, some of the golden ages enjoyed by Islamic empires, and some of the contributions those societies gave to the world. (And for those viewers who might have been wondering, there is even a brief explanation of the American group The Nation of Islam and its most famous disciple, Malcom X.) With roughly 1400 years of Islamic history, there is a lot to cover in 100 ... Read More

I lived in the 1950s and it was just great. This show presented too many stuff from a 90s leftist perspective. At the outset, however, there is SOME good to be found in this miniseries: the descriptions of the civil rights movement, suburbanization, the beatniks, television, the fall of Cuba to Castro and the rise of rock and roll are quite accurate, even if you can get by the "teens are rebels" slant.

That, unfortunately, is all the good to be found in this seemingly endless procession of leftist viewpoints. Having portrayed the usual happy image of the decade, the producers seem willing to declare war on this, and they do. They fling us from the frying pan of rock and roll straight into the fire of total liberalism. The producers' goal is clear from the beginning: to portray the 1950s as a horrible decade ... VHS : Battleships
For centuries, battleships were the ultimate weapons. A navy that had them in their possession could rule the seas. After the Dreadnought entered service in the Royal Navy in 1906, an arms race began between the major world powers. This was one of the causes that lead to World War I, where German and British fleets met at Jutland in 1916. This one engagement is considered the ultimate high seas gun battle and was a blueprint for the planning of many naval fleets following the armistice.

After the war, navies began to demilitarize. Treaties reduced the size of the fleets to a specified tonnage. However, the axis powers (Germany and Japan namely) broke from the treaty and began an arms race which culminated in 1939 with the outbreak of the Second World War. Battleships participated in some great battles during the ... Read More

This series has great content covering a wide range of different subjects, battles and individuals not always included in CW documentaries. I recommend it for the video library of all Civil War buffs.

Even though I have watched all the shows I pull these off the shelf and watch them when I can't find anything else on TV.

At 45 minutes or so each show, you get a very detailed exploration into the episode's subject matter instead of the general overview you might find in other documentaries.

My only gripe and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the quality of the tapes. I can't understand why a set costing what this one does would be taped at (EP) mode. What a disappointment, content this good deserved better, and so do we when paying this much for a set like this.

Despite the ... Read More
