VHS : The Man Who Saw Tomorrow
This really is a great movie. Wells does a fantastic job as narrator. It's great fun and great entertainment. I remember watching this movie in the mid 80's on VHS and being freaked out about the end of the world predictions. Time passed and we're still here. The story is filled holes and lies, but it's all good fun just the same.

VHS : The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set)
As for the person who complained that Martin Scorcese called the '80's the "me" decade, that was a popular theme of the time. Maybe you should go back and look at 80's and the literature about it from all kind of sources. Just like the 20's was often refered to as the "Roaring" 20's. 80's was often called the "me" decade. I also think it is not a liberal or conservative designation. Following the internalization of values and desires in the 70's, the 80's was when technology, growth, income and development all led to the application of the 70's trend of an individual ethic. People DID become more selfish and self centered, more complacent, in need of more instant gratification.

VHS : Sarah Plain And Tall
First off, let me clarify in my personal response that I've never been a fan of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction books bore me, and they never seem to contain the excitement found in contemporary fiction. Sarah, Plain and Tall, while more character-centric than most historical fiction books, still just didn't catch my interest. I was just glad that unlike many historical fiction books, this one actually didn't shove random historical facts down the readers' throats in massive clumps--the historical details were there, but very subtle. Still, the plot was too plain, with not enough branches and wacky plot twists. Everything was hopelessly predictable, and I know children's authors can do much better than that. That being said, I'd still like to read the sequels (never can pass ... Read More

VHS : Walt Disney's True Life Adventures - The Living Desert
As a youth, I remember watching "The Wonderful World of Disney" (which, if I'm not mistaken, was later renamed "The Wonderful World of Color"). It was on every Sunday night and would feature cartoons, a serial program like "Davie Crocket: King of the Wild Frontier", or any variety of other Disney-worthy productions including a number of nature programs. I believe it was on that TV show that I first saw "The Living Desert". It won an Academy Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary in 1953.

The photography is the key and the producers wanted us to understand that right from the beginning. The introductary comments mention that the film is the result of hundreds of hours of patient work by wildlife photographers. The ensuing glimpses of wildlife in the desert is fascinating. ... VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both then and now, is largely rhythm section dominated (elecrtic bass, drums, guitar and keys). Therefore, it may have been difficult for a Marsalis, a horn player, to appreciate.

Why refer to Marsalis and not Burns? Because nearly all of Burns' analysis depends upon the viewpoint of ... Read More

VHS : War Room (Sp)
I first saw "The War Room" back when I was a Democrat in the middle nineties and it struck me then as an excellent documentary. My initial assessment remains accurate today even though the politicizing of James Carville now repulses me. This documentary fulfills every expectation. It takes a snapshot at an isolated point in time and conveys a bevy of information about an era. We discover (or re-discover as the case may be) Bill Clinton along with the folks who orchestrated his 1992 campaign. "The War Room" also is an excellent primary source document and a fine piece of history. It remains topical as some of the same figures graced Senator Clinton's run for the Democratic Party nomination in 2008. As many of these magnates were a part of the Clinton Administration (albeit briefly), the movie yields considerable insight ... Read More

VHS : The Best of On the Road With Charles Kuralt
Charles Kuralt was the poet of small town America the way Vin Scully is the poet of Dodger Stadium. Relaxed, warm, folksy and deceptively insightful. He had a way of setting you at ease and somehow convincing you that the entire cosmos could be found in the minutia of this one fleeting moment. His beloved little program, 'ON THE ROAD' (1967-80) in which he traveled the backroads of America in a motorhome to show us the real heart of the country was eagerly anticipated by countless people every weekend - myself included.

Once every couple of years, when I need a little lift, I get out my boxed set of THE BEST OF 'ON THE ROAD' WITH CHARLES KURALT' and pop in one of the three 60 minute tapes. I invariably end up watching all three in one sitting. It's as if once I'm on the road, I can't quite convince myself ... Read More

VHS : Streetwise
Although this video was shot some time ago, by the famed photographer Mary Ellen Mark, the conditions are as applicable now as they were back when it was made some years ago. This video "Streetwise" portays the life of several street kids in Seattle: "Tiny", the prostitute, who can't be any more than about 13 or 14; "Rat" who goes dumpster-diving for food; and Roberta Josephine (Bobbie Jo) who was eventually strangled to death by Gary Ridgway, the "Green River Killer", active in Seattle at that time and responsible for the deaths of many runaways in the Seattle area.

The conditions under which these kids live and survive is appalling. "Rat" lives in an abandoned hotel, the windows boarded up, sleeping on an old mattress on the floor. It's chilling to think of a kid being there, though he is with an older friend. ... Read More

VHS : Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)
Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music was far from the straightforward Discovery Channel-type documentary that I imagined. There was none of the typical narrative, offsite interviews of resource persons, or anything post-event.

This film was made at the very heart of the festival, making the 3 or so hours of footage feel indeed like 3 days, as it spanned across all sub-plots of the event. There were closeup shots of the musical performances down to the foot-tapping, the literally dirty fingers tuning the guitars, and hands wildly beating on the bongo drums. There were casual interviews with the young organizers at work, the bewildered (some annoyed) locals, the toilet cleaner who took great pride in making the portalets "pleasanter" for the kids, and all kinds of hippies, some even offering the film crew smokage.
