Well cast, well made. Scenery, uniforms, speech, that all important but difficult to capture "feel" for the times all present. Freeman was brilliant and Broderick turns in his best performance ever. I have watched it many times and as a living historian have used the Sharpsburg battle scene often as an accurate portrayal for students to see the horror of war. But, when history meets Hollywood, history will almost always get mugged along the way. The Civil War at
Sea, (volume 3) by Virgil Carrington Jones, page 13 tells the truth about the fictional assault OVER the wall and into the fort. NEVER HAPPENED. ..."planted the flag upon the parapet. At this moment of the attack Shaw was killed, and the Fifty-fourth seemed to go to pieces....its members were seized with a furious panic and ... Read More

VHS : Malcolm X (2pc)
I could easily have given this movie five stars on the acting alone. But I had to take out one star for a few inaccuracies in the movie plus the movie left out certain elements in his life that I felt were important(like his speech to the Africans in Africa that the blacks in America had the same struggle that they had) but dont mistake my tone because I still recommend it flaws and all.

Malcolm X details the life of the controversial yet charismatic figure that sought to deal with the injustices that African people suffered in America. It details how he came up from being a petty street hustler to the Nation Of Islam most outspoken character. It also deals with the events that lead to his assassination.

Denzel Washington's best performance was here and what does he ... Read More

... despite the mitigation of a Hollywood love story and a fictitious super-hero, but still not as painful as the TRUTH, the true and well-documented story of an ethnic cleansing in Florida in 1923, when, over several days, European-American mobs attacked the peaceful and prosperous African-American village of Rosewood, in Levy County. During the attack, survivors estimated, as many as eighteen African-Americans and two European-Americans were. Most of the buildings, including churches and a school, were burned. The community was abandoned and, in spite of permanent loss of land and homes, the citizens never returned. Women and children were rescued, as shown in this film, by the crew of the train that regularly stopped at the village. Given the three days of carnage, news of the events reached ... Read More

VHS : Daughters of the Dust
Calling daughters of the dust an unusual film is somewhat of an understatement. the film doesn't follow most Hollywood film conventions. That being said i think daughters of the dust is a good film, worth watching for, if nothing else, its originality. it shows the life of a family living on the Gullah islands, days before they plan on moving to mainland America.

The film is quite simple with most of the time spent showing the character's relationships and interactions with each other. The actors in the film do a great job at playing there characters honestly and realistically. Daughters of the Dust intentionally doesn't follow a strong linear plot. Julie dash wanted to create a new kind of film and she seems to have succeeded. The power of this movie is in its images, music and relationships ... Read More

This film give a brief but interesting look at the hardships and problems that these individuals suffered as a result of their race instead of their abilities. While there is a footnote to the fact that these individuals were the most decorated unit in the Air Corp, it does not follow-up with what happens to them after the war.
