VHS : Yellow Submarine
They did a great job of restoring it to its original color, and the sound quality was good, too. I shared it with my art students, and they loved it (although some thought it was a little weird!).

VHS : Liquid Sky
'LIQUID SKY' is one of the most irritating, weird and oddly watchable movies ever made. Centered around the underground world of Margaret played by Anne Carlisle, a heroin-soaked fashion model but fashions more suited to Barnum @ Bailey than Park Avenue. Heroin hungry aliens in a pie-plate sized saucer land on Margarets rooftop because the aliens have discovered a heroin-like substance is secreted in the brain at the point of orgasm and Margaret unknowingly dispatches a few donors to the aliens thirst. Each victim is left with a crystal obelisk imbedded deep into their skull-the meaning of the obelisk? Who knows? But in this movie-you just accept it.

Margaret shares her apartment with a vile, foul-mouthed gnome played by Paula Sheppard who is a heroin-pusher and a bizzaro performance ... Read More

Terry Gilliam's unique satire is as funny as it is absurd and dark. With the character of Sam Lowry he created the perfect anti-hero, not in the least thanks to the brilliant performance by Jonathan Pryce.

Equally well known is the conflict that Gilliam had to enter into to get his movie released as he wanted it, because the studio heads suddenly got not only cold feet but also the crazy notion to have a happy ending and drastically make cuts in the movie to make it shorter. Gilliam took the right approach, organized a film critics screening who raved about it and thus embarrassed the studio execs. The result was two versions of the movie, the studio version without dream sequences but with happy ending to be shown in the US and a European version of the movie Gilliam had actually made.

4.Zabriskie Point starring: Mark Frechette, Daria Halprin, Paul Fix, G.D. Spradlin, Bill Garaway

VHS : Zabriskie Point
This is a very intriguing film and rather euphoric in its approach from director Michelangelo Antonioni. It is a quixotically coherent effort from director Antonioni and the story works on several levels making it stand apart from other films in this era. The actors give titillating performances. It is so interesting to see Rod Taylor show up in this film.

5.Zardoz starring: John Alderton, Daisy Boorman, Katrine Boorman, Telsche Boorman, Niall Buggy

VHS : Zardoz
Considering a title like "Zardoz" and a cover featuring Sean Connery in what looks like a red diaper, this movie has a lot more seriousness and quality going for it. It is 70s science fiction: glitzy, ridiculous special effects providing a medium for real social commentary. The thing is, though, Boorman plays up the surreal and Carnivalesque in this movie, resulting in something closer to a fever dream than escapist fantasy. Re-introducing the social commentary results in a movie that is compelling and maddening all at once.

If a viewer gets past the opening and the following introduction of Zardoz the giant gun-giving clay head without thinking that something is amiss, they probably aren't actually taking the movie seriously enough on its own terms, and from there it's pretty easy to get lost. What we have here is an abject ... Read More

Conspiring monster bugs. . .ejaculating typewriters. . .inter-zone intrigue. . .
As a statement on addiction--interesting.
As a statement on writing--interesting.
As entertainment--duh?
Well-acted, well-made, but just, at times, so flat-out weird that it makes it, well--not enjoyable.

7.Up in Smoke starring: Edie Adams, Marian Beeler, Pam Bille, Michael Caldwell (III), Tommy Chong
directed by: Tommy Chong, Lou Adler

VHS : Up in Smoke
When "Up in Smoke" premiered in September 1978, straight and stoned patrons laughed hysterically at the cinematic debut of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. Seen today, the film survives as a period piece - terribly uneven and less amusing with the passage of time. Stacy Keach makes an excellent foil for Cheech and Chong's pot-laced antics, but the duo's comedy albums were much funnier.

VHS : Pink Floyd - The Wall
Of all the efforts put in bt Pink Floyd, this is the one essential Roger Waters compilation. This product is a journey into madness. It's about the alienation he feels between the band and the fans.

VHS : The Monkees - Head
I remember when the Monkees show was on Saturday morning reruns, and my siblings were surpised that I enjoyed it despite my very young age. In the age of "MASH" (actually 1-2 years before) there were indeed a great many persons who conflated mere juxtapositions and semi-random non-sequiters with the sense of anomie they felt at the time, and were desperate to see expressed in some way.

Funny, but my 4 OR 5-year old self (although purely in terms of chronological age!) seemed to be the ideal audience for this kind of writing. As a child, I could delight in pure zaniness for its own sake, quite unconcerned about the lack of moral convictions betrayed by the writers (the perfect example is when the film has a woman being punched out, purely for the supposed comedic value of doing so [in a typically childish delight in norm violations ... VHS : The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
This is definitely art in moving form.
Mesmerizing.
Capturing The Beatles during their very brilliant psychedelic period. This dvd is great for anyone who wasn't born, can't remember or wants to take a journey back in time.
Though not a Beatles fanatic,I can't resist taking refreshing glance backward to a strange but wonderful place in time.
'I am The Walrus' played out by the band in beautiful, colorful clothes and egg costumes is spliced and put together in a psychedelic collage that's a masterpiece. This in itself is a reason to get this dvd.
The whole film is spectacular.
Highly recommended.
