VHS : Omen
The Omen was a good four star horror film that I saw in 1976 which had an excellent story and good special effects. The gated cemetary guarded by hounds from hell was fantastic, and as far as atmosphere and pure horror this scene was on a par with the old Universal movies. The musical score was very effective at establishing the mood for the film.

What I don't understand was the absolute rave that came out of Hollywood for this film at the academy awards which had dozens of dancers on stage and vocalists chanting in Latin. This was entertaining but didn't really make any sense. All of Hollywood turned out to say this film was the best thing for horror since Universal's Frankenstein. I thought it was good but not deserving of all that praise.

This was the first ... Read More

VHS : Omen 2
Damien Omen II is a decent sequel to the original Omen film, which was released in 1976. The cast is very strong and includes such well-known actors as William Holden, Lee Grant, and Robert Foxworth. Jonathan Scott-Taylor is excellent as the precocious Damien who gradually realizes his is the Devil's son.

For the most part the plot traces a series of horrific deaths that pave the way for Damien to gain wealth and influence. It becomes obvious that many of the people in his life are evil, and are helping kill-off anyone who threatens Damien's rise to power. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film is how rational, worldly people discover the truth about Damien and become unhinged.

Another strong point of Damien Omen II is the cinematography. Filmed largely outdoors, ... Read More

VHS : Omen 3: The Final Conflict
This is a movie I appreciate in terms of it having some interesting philosophical undertones.

The film is underappreciated; people try to make it out to be something that it is not. Of course it is not like the first movie, what sequel ever is? What would be of interest if it was just the same thing recycled all over again?

As for a weak script, I hardly see it. When Damien speaks to Christ and when he does the television interview, he's strangely...right. There's a sick sort of sense to what he says that makes one take a step back for a second and ask themselves, "Am I sympathizing with the Devil?". The third film gave something the others hadn't taken the time to address: what exactly is going through Damien Thorn's head? Why does he do these horrible things? It's what makes the ... Read More

10-years after the 3rd Omen movie, The Omen IV was the movie to restart the franchise and keep it going. But its movies like this are why we have so many remakes. I wasn't expecting a masterpiece of filmmaking, but I was expecting a fairly decent movie; something that would serve as a decent time killer. But what I got was one really, really bad movie. Omen IV starts off weak, but watchable, but than it just goes down and becomes a complete waste of time.

The screenplay written by Brian Taggert wasn't very good, but not the worst I have come across. The script was weak and the biggest problem is it tries too hard to be like the original and it fails. The characters are fairly decent, but the script never really becomes much. The problem was the script just wasn't very interesting like I said the screenplay ... Read More

VHS : Damien: Omen II
This is a first class, gothic chiller with an outstanding cast, a riveting story line, and a musical score that will make the viewer want to sleep with the lights on! A first rate film, it had audiences riveted to the screen when it was first released in the mid nineteen seventies. I know. I was one of that audience. This film has withstood the test of time, as it is as gripping today, as when it was first released.

Katherine (Lee Remick) and Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) are a wealthy, older American couple. Katherine is pregnant and, while in Italy, gives birth to an ostensibly stillborn boy, a fact that is kept from her. Knowing how much his wife wanted the baby and the difficulty that she had in conceiving, Robert agrees to have the dead baby supplanted by a living newborn whose mother died in child birth, keeping this information from Katherine. ...
