I'll admit, I just started sampling anime from the Mecha genre, and I don't really have a lot of experience with it. However, I've been watching anime for a long time, so I have a lot to compare this to. I was born in 1982, and I have a pretty good understanding of 80's culture, so I had the capacity to appreciate this series while overlooking some of its outmoded gimmicks. I'll list the flaws of this DVD numerically.

1. The dubbing is terrible. The english version of the singing is god-awful, and the male voices are just bad in general. When the female cast is speaking, it's passable. However, you may be asking why I don't just use the subtitles, but that brings me to my next criticism.

2. The combat is not conducted well, and that's why I can't use subtitles. Let ... Read More

BUBBLEGUM CRISIS, an eight-part OAV series which first appeared in 1987, is significant in the history of Japanese animation as one of the earliest successes in the first wave of official anime video releases to hit the U.S. back in 1991. Set in Mega-Tokyo in the year 2032, it offered a mix of sci-fi cyberpunk, music video and crime thriller as it told the tale of the Knight Sabers, a private para-police group of attractive young women who don "hard suits" and go after rogue "Boomers," bio-engineered androids who do much of the work in this dystopian future society. In the process, the girls frequently butt heads with their rivals, the A.D. Police.

The main reason to see this series today is because its such a vivid example of 1980s style sci-fi anime. The linework is clear and bold, the colors ... Read More

VHS : Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: Trial by Fire
I remember when I rented the series in the late 1980's and how impressed I was with the storyline about corrupt, nefarious corporate interests bent on subjugating the world through advanced biomechanical constructs. Having beautiful girls in technologically superior hard-suits fighting against this behemoth only added to the depth of the plot.

The animation was really ahead of its time even by todays standard. I thought the details given to each character gave the series a unmistakable quality of uniqueness often overlooked in the current iteration. Nene, Lena, and Sylia seem a bit cookie-cutter bland.

The emphasis on the environment and scenery with a obtruse pointless fog on the technology involved took away most of what could have been a worthy successor.

I came into this series not knowing how it related to the original Bubblegum Crisis of which I was a long time fan. The story seemed to be earlier, but the 2040 date is clearly later. The truth is that they are separate. This is a new interpretation of the basic premise. Lina and Nene are much better developed and more interesting characters. Priss is Priss, but Sylia has turned psycho on us. I am not happy with this new boomer hating Sylia Stingray. The animation is good and fluid, actually better than the original which was sort of awkward. I have viewed both the subbed and dubbed tapes. In this case, I preferred the dubbed ones. The dubbing is well done and I get more out of it then when I'm trying to read and watch at the same time. A good inheritor of the Bubblegum Crisis standard, but don't ... Read More

After being very pleased with the first two installments of this series, I have waited anxiously for this most resent tape and it maintains the high quality of the previous episodes and then some. The first episode is refreshing in that it is a complete story involving real people and not just a mad boomer getting blown to bits. The second episode begins to get away from the previous obsession the series has had with Linna and begins to look more at Priss. We get a chance to see into her head and begin to dig up hints about her past. Prior to this, our only hints to Priss' past (at least in video) have been some brief flashbacks in the Hurricaine videos.

My big complaint, why only two episodes? The first two tapes had three episodes apiece, yet I'm paying just as much for this one.
