VHS : Pride & Prejudice (1995) (6pc) (Coll Box)
This is by far the best version of "Pride and Prejudice". I believe I have seen every one of them and none compares. Laurence Olivier was great of course as Darcy, but Colin Firth has completely captured the character. I doubt that any one will ever be able to portray Darcy better.
I am extremely satified that I purchased the 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition even though I all ready had the original DVD of the same produecton. It is definitely well worth the price. I strongly recommend it to every one. The DVDs come in a beautifully designed case, and I thoroughly enjoyed the accompanying behind-the-scenes disc. Even though Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle were busy making other movies and could not be on it, the remaining cast members were very entertaining. The accompanying ... Read More

VHS : Agatha Christie's Miss Marple Collection 2 (VHS Boxed Set)
On my TV set with my DVD player all of the discs looked and sounded fine.
I enjoy Helen Hayes for being Helen Hayes and Margaret Rutherford for being Margaret Rutherford but for Agatha Christies Miss Marple Jane Hickson wins hands down. I have tried only one of the latest British entry and she, too, appears quite able but Ms. Hickson has set the standard for authenticity (which, quite legitimately, was not the objective of Ms. Hayes or Ms. Rutherford).
To one who has never been to the UK, the settings seem quite fitting to the time and place, the stories well told, the acting first rate, and the manner appealing. The last has become quite important to me over the years; I mean by it the minimization of actual violence, the emphasis on character and story, not on split second action, and ... Read More

VHS : A&E Biography - William Shakespeare: Life of Drama (1996)
I'm a High school drama teacher and while doing a lesson on Shakespeare I bought this video to teach the kids about Shakespeare's life. It has a lot of great information and it doesn't dumb it down (if you get what I mean). Its not just a biography of the events in Shakespeare's life, it looks at him as a man and explores how events in his life triggered his creative process. There is a lot of great commentary from well respected scholars and classical actors and directors. Great teaching tool for anyone trying to make Shakespeare cool.

VHS : Testament of Youth (4pc)
I first saw this series when it was broadcast on PBS in 1980 and although I missed the first two installments I was emotionally moved by its impact. Since then, having read both Vera Brittain's "Testament of Youth" and her diary of the same period, "Chronicle of Youth," I was eager to again see how this was adapted for television.

Because neither a memoir nor a diary, in contrast to a work of fiction, necessarily conveys the nature of the personalities of different individuals, I was especially curious to see how they were portrayed in the dramatization. I have to say that I was not disappointed in any case (with the minor quibble that Joanna McCallum was much better looking than Winifred Holtby).

It is one thing to cast actors who physically resemble the people they portray (or at least resemble ... Read More

VHS : Biography - Malcolm X: A Search For Identity
I always learn from A&E Biography and was not disappointed in this one. The DVD was way expensive so I bought this one. Malcom was one of the most interesting people and lived a good & full life until his tragic murder.
