VHS : National Geographic's Love Those Trains
This video is a must for train buffs! It has everything a train enthusiast wants in a video: solid information coupled with stunning footage of some of the most interesting train runs in the world, as well as clips from "the good old days" of railroading. The video provides a good historical perspective of railroading and the advent of steam engines, moving along briskly to bring the viewer up to modern times. Because it was produced in the early 80's, some of the material may be a little dated, but a true rail fan won't be bothered by this aspect. The video is produced in the classic informative and easy-to-watch style which is the hallmark of National Geographic Videos. If you love trains, you won't be disappointed.

NOVA documentaries always seem to capture me, but this one literally left me with my jaw dropped in my lap the first time I saw it on TV. This film focuses on a group of men which attempt to restore a B-29, which crashed and was abandoned in Greenland during a secret mission during W.W.II. Their goal: to completely restore the B-29 on-site, and launch it from the nearby frozen lake bed. The technicalities of what they must accomplish to restore this airplane are mind-boggling. Most NOVA documentaries are very engaging, but besides being a technical chronicle of what these men accomplished in extreme environs, a tragic incident, and finally the jaw-dropping, dumbfounding conclusion, are what set this documentary apart from any other NOVA documentary I have seen. You simply will not want to believe ... Read More

I found this movie/documentary to be rather sophmoric and goofy, but worth watching anyway. Some motorcycle magazine editors feel they have to mention this, "EPIC", tale in their respective publications every month, raving about how wonderful it is and how much it influenced their lives. I just don't see it. I grew up in the 60"s and 70"s and have been riding motorcycles for 39 years. I certainly didn't need Bruce Brown to tell me to.

Colgate seems to be conducting the video off the cuff. It appears to be a single camera shoot. Because of the lack of scripting the video wavers in content. Colgate is not a natural in front of the camera and appears to be a bit of a task master. For example when the 80's actors/stundents make up commands for tasks that need no command, Colgate fails to realize the fun in this and insists on eliminating the commands. There are several gaffs in the film which make for unwitting humor. An example is when Colgate describes tieing a square knot as easy and the actors disagree. This is followed by a quick edit and on to the next scene leaving us to sumise that the actors were scolded for making Colgate look bad and the scene removed. Bearing these points in mind it is still an informative video that serves ... Read More

This video was released in '95 and even 12 years later it's worth getting out your old VCR for a watch. I caught "Tank Girl" on TV yesterday and heard the same song thats played in Jeremy Mcgrath's incredible opening segment, so I came home and spent an hour digging for my old VHS tapes and hooking up the VCR just for those first few minutes of motocross bliss. While I don't enjoy the rest of the video as much, its still worth owning and watching even if just for the nostalgia of the good old days when Mcgrath was king riding atop the Honda CR Steed.

VHS : America's Scenic Rail Journeys: Adirondack
One of the most beautiful passenger routes in North America is Amtrak's Adirondack between New York City NY and Montréal, Quebec. The line follows a north-south alignment through eastern New York state, following the Hudson Valley, penetrating the Adirondack Mountains, and skirting the west edge of Lake Champlain. This show, narrated by actor James Coburn, begins with a montage of film scenes followed by the series' introduction featuring computer- animated train. A map is used to trace the route of the train. In addition to typical lineside and on-board views, there are some nice aerial shots.

The journey begins at Penn Station in New York City with views of the lobby and office. Amtrak conductor Rick Palmer talks about his job, greets passengers (some of whom he knows personally) and collects ... Read More
